Heatherdale Road, Mitcham level crossing removal

We’re removing the level crossing at Heatherdale Road to reduce congestion in the area and create a safer, more connected community.

Proposed design

A number of design options were considered for the Heatherdale Road Level Crossing Removal project. The preferred option includes:
  • Lowering the rail line below Heatherdale Road.
  • Rebuilding Heatherdale Station on the east side of Heatherdale Road, closer to the existing car parks improving access to the station.
  • Lowered platforms accessed via lifts, ramps and stairs.
  • Optimising the car parking to ensure there is no net loss of parking spaces.
  • Building a walking and cycling path with improved pedestrian access to the station.

Please note, a pedestrian crossing is not pictured however it will be included in the design.

Current progress

The preferred contractor has now been selected and includes Leighton Contractors, Aurecon and Hyder. When the contract is awarded in the coming months, they will form an alliance to construct the project with VicRoads, Public Transport Victoria and Metro Trains Melbourne.

Construction is expected to begin in late 2015. In the meantime, the project team will be talking with the local community to get more input into the Heatherdale Road project before finalising the designs. There will also be early works this year to prepare the site for construction, including service relocation.

Involving the community

The design for Heatherdale Road was developed using a recent online community survey which asked the community for feedback on their experiences using the level crossing. There will be further opportunity for the local community including residents, traders, community groups and Council to have a say on the Heatherdale Road Level Crossing Removal.

The project team will be hosting information sessions so people can learn more about the project and view designs. Details of the information sessions will be finalised soon and promoted in local newspapers, on the project website and around the local community.

Construction impacts

The project at Heatherdale Road will be delivered at the same time as the Blackburn Road Level Crossing Removal.  This will minimise disruption to the road and rail network, reducing the number of closures required on the Belgrave/Lilydale line, and accelerating the delivery of the overall level crossing project for the community. Both projects will take approximately 12 -18 months to complete.

During major construction, there will be changes to train and bus services, to traffic and to pedestrian access. We are dedicated to keeping the local community and commuters informed of any changes. We will work with local traders and residents to minimise the impact of changes as much as we can.
