An overflow crowd packed Langford Council Chambers on February 4 and cheered enthusiastically with the announcement that the City has entered into a partnership to build a new aquatic centre.

Mayor Stew Young said the partnership between the YMCA/YWCA, the City of Langford and Westhills Land Corporation is another example of Langford Council's commitment to provide world-class recreational opportunities for Langford residents and families.

“If you look across Canada, we have the best recreational facilities for a town this size,” Mayor Young said to rounds of applause. “This complex will be the biggest project in the history of Langford, and will create jobs and economic activity.” Mayor Young praised the YMCA/YWCA for the numerous programs it provides that are beneficial to families and foster healthy communities.

Jennie Edgecombe, CEO for the Victoria YMCA/YWCA said the Y is delighted to partner with the City and Westhills to build a healthy community and provide the best in recreation.

The cost for the aquatic centre, to be located at Langford City Centre Park, is estimated at between $25 and $30 million. The complex, which includes a lap pool, lazy river, warm water therapy pool, waterslide, health and fitness facility and daycare centre, is slated for completion in the fall of 2015. Mayor Young said Council is also working with the Greater Victoria Library Board on the possibility of including a library branch in the facility.
