Rap duo Outkast took home the favorite music group honor at last night's (June 25) second annual BET Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. Usher left with the best male R&B artist award, while newcomer India.Arie took the female R&B artist trophy. Outkast's Big Boi dedicated the group's award to Khujo from fellow Atlanta rap act Goodie Mob. Khujo (real name: Robert Barnett) was reportedly badly hurt in a car accident the night before.

The event recognizes people of color in music, film, and sports categories voted on by record label executives, media, and fans. Other music winners included Ja Rule (best male hip-hop artist), Missy Elliott (best female hip-hop artist), Alicia Keys (best new artist), and Yolanda Adams (best gospel artist). Rapper Busta Rhymes won the best video honor for the clip for his track "Pass the Courvoisier, Part II," featuring P. Diddy and Pharrell.

Nelly, Ja Rule, Tweet, Gerald Levert, Adams, B2K, Ludacris, and lifetime achievement honoree Earth, Wind and Fire all performed during the show, which was broadcast live on BET and co-hosted by comedians Steve Harvey and Cedric The Entertainer. Cash Money and Truth Hurts performed outside the Kodak Theatre during the pre-show broadcast.

A report on BET.com notes that there were some tense moments during a commercial break, as heated conversation between Death Row Records founder Suge Knight and rapper Snoop Dogg was on the verge of becoming something more. Just before the show was to resume, Harvey "asked for respect," according to the report, prompting Knight to approach the stage for a brief conversation with the comic. Snoop Dogg then relocated to the backstage entrance where he remained for the remainder of the show.

"I talked to Suge and asked him for respect and Suge said he would never disrespect the event," Harvey said backstage later, according to the site. In accepting her favorite new artist award, Keys addressed the situation saying, "We have lost too many people for no reason and we don't need to perpetuate that. This is for all the people that we lost."
