With Marshawn Lynch’s status up in the air, the Seahawks re-signed running back Bryce Brown this week to bolster depth at the position. The Seahawks also added depth at receiver, promoting receiver B.J. Daniels off of the practice squad. Defensive tackle A.J. Francis was waived and linebacker Nick Moody was placed on injured reserve to make room on the roster.
Brown, 24, first signed with the Seahawks four weeks ago when Thomas Rawls was dealing with a calf injury, but was inactive for both games while on Seattle’s roster. Brown was waived Saturday to make room on the roster for linebacker Eric Pinkins, who was promoted off the practice squad.
Lynch, who missed Sunday’s game with an abdominal injury and flew to Philadelphia Monday to see a specialist to get more clarity on the injury. The Seahawks only suited up two running backs for their win over San Francisco, Rawls and Fred Jackson, though fullback Derrick Coleman played that position in college and is an option there as well. Even if Lynch’s injury isn’t one that will require surgery, Carroll did not express optimism that Lynch would be ready for this week’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“I don’t know about that now,” Carroll said Monday when asked if there’s a scenario in which Lynch could play this week. “It’s legitimately bothering him. He would have played yesterday if he could have, so I don’t know that.”
Brown, who is in his fourth NFL season, has rushed for 1,004 yard and 6 touchdowns on 226 carries in his career. A seventh-round pick out of Kansas State in 2012, Brown rushed for a career-best 564 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie with the Philadelphia Eagles. Brown was traded to Buffalo prior to the 2014 season, where he was teammates with Jackson, then was released by Buffalo prior to the start of this season.
Daniels, who switched from quarterback to receiver this offseason, has split time between the active roster and practice squad this season, and has one catch for 12 yards.
Francis, who the Seahawks claimed off waivers last week, was inactive for Sunday’s game against San Francisco. Moody, who had been seeing significant playing time on special teams, injured his hamstring during the win over the 49ers.
The Seahawks also made a couple of practice squad moves, placing rookie tackle Terry Poole on practice squad injured reserve and adding running back DuJuan Harris and receiver Tyler Slavin. Harris, who went undrafted out of Troy in 2011, has spent time with Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Minnesota and New Orleans, and has rushed for 263 yards in his career, including a career-best 157 yards and two touchdowns in four games with the Packers in 2012. Slavin went undrafted out of New Mexico Highlands this year and signed with St. Louis as a free agent in May.
