NETWORK UPDATE: Both NCIS and NCIS: NEW ORLEANS gained 0.1 in final numbers for their crossover episodes. The rest of the networks, including the NBC Dick Wolf crossover and FOX’s sitcoms, stayed as-is.
Broadcast Official Nationals Program Ratings Chart
CABLE HIGHLIGHTS: Let’s take a minute to dig into MTV’s numbers last night. THE SHANNARA CHRONICLES had a fair start at 0.48, which was 0.02 higher than the midseason premiere of TEEN WOLF, its lead-in at 0.46 (up 0.02 from its August finale). However, the demos are a little more ambiguous. Apart from with 18-49s, SHANNARA beat TEEN WOLF in the 25-54 and 50+ demos, with TEEN WOLF still ahead in MTV’s core demos of 12-34 and 18-34. (SHANNARA also skewed more male, which may or may not be a good thing.) Advertisers don’t come to MTV for older demos, so that’s not ideal for the network. However, if SHANNARA can keep up this level overall, no doubt MTV will have little to quibble about. SHANNARA also ran on MTV2 (0.03/115K), TeenNick (0.02/117K), and TV Land (0.06/248K).
Elsewhere, THE HAVES AND HAVE NOTS returned to OWN at 0.93, in keeping with where it had been last season (although below September’s 1.19 finale). History’s CURSE OF OAK ISLAND lost 0.07 to 0.88, with an AFTERSHOW at 0.45. HGTV’s FIXER UPPER was at 0.76, with lead-outs HOUSE HUNTERS at 0.50 and HOUSE HUNTERS INTL at 0.37. Discovery’s MOONSHINERS jumped two-tenths to 0.75, with new lead-out KILLING FIELDS at 0.45. On Bravo, REAL HOUSEWIVES OF BEVERLY HILLS edged up 0.02 to 0.69, and GIRLFRIENDS GUIDE TO DIVORCE was steady at 0.26. On TLC, THE LITTLE COUPLE was at 0.53, and KATE PLUS 8 lost 0.05 to 0.35. DANCE MOMS returned to Lifetime at 0.51, with a lead-in special at 0.38, and new lead-out PITCH SLAPPED at 0.28. A&E’s MARRIED AT FIRST SIGHT dropped 0.05 to 0.45, and the just-renewed BORN THIS WAY fell 0.08 to 0.31. BET aired ZOE EVER AFTER at 0.38, with lead-out REAL HUSBANDS OF HOLLYWOOD at 0.32. Syfy’s THE EXPANSE justified its network’s confidence (and early renewal) to some extent, rising 0.05 to 0.22, its second consecutive increase. On POP, IMPACT WRESTLING was at 0.08/255K.

Episode 4 0.63 mill, 0.17
Episode 5 0.63 mill, 0.22
And with that, the myth that streaming affected the ratings(Which it didn’t), was busted.
No it wasn’t. All of the younger demographics went up 2 weeks in a row. The younger demos are the ones that watch online if it’s on earlier.
Whisker Haven Tales with the Palace Pets at 1:50 pm on Disney Channel? show was listed new.
So it looks like TNA is right where they were when they were on Destination America.
Shannara Teen Nick pls 10pm ☺
That’s now in the text.
Limitless looks even more like a total faliure now. Losing 1.1 from its lead in. That is terrible
@Syfy’s THE EXPANSE justified its network’s confidence (and early renewal)
Episode 3: 0.15 18-49
Episode 4: 0.17 18-49
Episode 5: 0.22 18-49
Mitch, with all due respect. That’s nonsense. Please explain your reasoning. I would genuinely love to know how a 0.07 increase between two episodes combined justify’s a second season(Despite the numbers being poor).
Just to compare, the most recent season of Paranormal Witness for example.
Episode 3: 0.26 18-49
Episode 4: 0.23 18-49
Episode 5: 0.30 18-49
Costs a fraction of The Expanse to produce.
Destiny, Mitch did say “somewhat”
Paranormal witness is on earlier. nielsen viewers (which suck) don’t watch live-viewing 10pm and later. Advertisements are online and on-demand, why do most people think businesses don’t like those viewers?
As someone noted, I wasn’t giving a ringing endorsement to the renewal with the word “somewhat.” But you have to start from the fact that Syfy did choose to renew the show despite what appear on their face to be awful ratings, and two consecutive weeks of increases are at least going in the right direction.
As we’ve noted here, the economics of series renewals are much more complex and mysterious than they’ve ever been in the past. The days of looking at a ratings number and knowing whether the thumb was going to be up or down are over–the intricacies of the deals are driving these decisions. My own theory on Expanse (and I have no inside information, this is just speculation) is that because the production studio Alcon is brand new to TV production, they very much wanted to keep their first series order on the air. They may have been willing to make a disadvantageous deal with Syfy to make that happen, and even though the show’s production cost is much higher than on Syfy’s usual Canadian co-productions, the license fee to the network may be at a similar level. That would make these numbers easier to swallow.
I think your theory is pretty sound. I would add that Syfy has spent so much time talking up their creative rebranding that cancelling one of the central pieces of that wouldn’t be in their best interest from a PR standpoint. They might be willing to eat some lower ratings in order to regain the trust of viewers they alienated with their recent development choices; even if The Expanse never becomes a solid player for them, it could lead to higher rates of sampling for future projects and help solidify this new direction they’re going in.
That’s a good point.
Do you have the viewership for the ‘Zoe Ever After’ episode that aired on Centric? And I know you don’t always get Reelz info, but if you did, could I also have ‘The Kennedy Files’? Thank you,
The Centric Zoe run was 0.03/53K
WITH ALL DUE RESPECT MSNBC 6:00pm?
Sorry, but we don’t provide news ratings that aren’t in the Top 150. There are just too many of them every day, and that’s a door we’re not going to open.
but its a brad new show. only the 2nd episode. just wanted to see where it was.
Do you know how Shannara did in its first hour compared to its second? Surprised MTV had a premiere go until midnight. Thanks.
“SHANNARA also skewed more male, which may or may not be a good thing” — It’s a good thing as is the average age. From Adweek today: “We wanted to broaden in scope and demographic,” said Mina Lefevre, evp and head of scripted development for MTV, who hopes the show will attract an older, more male audience alongside MTV’s core viewers.
MTV put episodes 3 and 4 online and on its app after the premiere. I wonder how that’ll affect the first run airings of those episode. Also something to keep in mind when reporting those in the week(s?) ahead.
No, we don’t regularly get breakdowns for segments within the cable broadcast.
The key to that quote from the MTV exec is that they want the older/male viewers “alongside MTV’s core viewers.” The potential problem with Shannara is that it just skewed old, underperforming with the core demos (compared to Teen Wolf) and making up the difference with older men.
It will be interesting to see if there’s a noticeable effect in the streamed Episode 3-4 ratings compared to 5+, although so far there seems to be little difference in the on-air ratings for streamed and non-streamed show episodes. The next wrinkle to this mix will come Angie Tribeca on TBS, which will air its entire season in one binge and then repeat all the episodes on a weekly basis. Nobody’s done that before, so no idea how it will affect the numbers.
The Angie idea is completely misguided on TBS’ part. The promos oddly don’t show the show’s Airplane! vibe and do nothing to help. People want to binge on their own terms not a network’s term. Unless TBS thinks season 2 is much stronger than season 1 and is getting it out of the way.
MTV made the first five episodes of Eye Candy available before their television premiere. I don’t have the demo numbers in front of me, but I think that was one of the factors in keeping its total viewers as steady as they were (590K, 630K, 520K, 600K, 620K). Plus, the episode following this practice bounced up to 710K, so we’ll have to wait for Shannara’s fifth episode to see what happens.
The Expanse should be canceled, it is so expensive! Defiance did much better but was not renewed…
