MAN WHO MADE SOLO LAWN MOWER JOURNEY DIES AT 76.
Byline: ASSOCIATED PRESS
Alvin Straight, who drove his lawn mower nearly 240 miles to visit his sick brother, died of a heart ailment Saturday. He was 76.
At his funeral procession Tuesday, family members followed the hearse with a trailer carrying a lawn mower similar to Straight's 1966 John Deere.
In the summer of 1994, Straight wanted to visit his brother Henry, who had suffered a stroke. But he couldn't see well enough to get a driver's license. He decided his only option was the mower.
Setting off in early July, towing a trailer loaded with gasoline, camping gear, clothes and food, he arrived at his brother's in Blue River, Wis., in mid-August.
The trip was chronicled by the likes of Jay Leno, Paul Harvey and David Letterman. Henry Straight recovered, and recently moved back to Iowa to be closer to his family.
