Make-A-Wish Child Designs own Yu-Gi-Oh! Card
Source: Cincinnati Enquirer
Quote:
"All I needed was a pencil and my imagination," Tyler Gressle said.
Tyler is a creative 14-year-old from Burlington who received the chance to design his own Yu-Gi-Oh! card for 4Kids Entertainment Inc. through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
His detailed drawing depicts a warrior deflecting an evil monster's terrible weapons.
Tyler knows a lot about being a warrior.
In October 2002, he was diagnosed with undifferentiated embryonic sarcoma, a cancer of the liver. It was discovered when he complained of pain. His parents took him to the doctor, then to a surgeon.
During surgery, the doctors discovered that the mass had burst, which caused the terrible pain. The surgeon removed 25 percent of Tyler's liver, about 6 inches of large intestine and his gall bladder.
Tyler's prognosis was not good. His cancer was rare, with only 250 documented cases. Fortunately, his doctor, Cindy DeLaat of Children's Hospital, had seen a case once before and had been successful in treating the patient, his mother said.
Make-a-Wish Foundation learned of Tyler and his family's battle. The foundation's goal is to present each child, along with their family, with a happy experience to help them feel normal in the midst of a difficult time.
Tyler and his family were invited to New York City to meet with officials from 4Kids Entertainment. They unveiled the final card on Aug. 5. He and his father, Tony Schepis, were given a tour of the Yu-Gi-Oh! facility.
When they returned to Northern Kentucky, Tyler's family and friends were treated to a party in the VIP room at Jillian's Entertainment in Covington.
"After a long, hard battle, Tyler is perfectly healthy now," his mother said. "We want other families to know they can have hope, and wishes do come true."

Is there any news on it being released as part of a set?
...Actually, I should be asking is it any good? 'Cause if it is just a vanilla filla' then I don't care.

Not necessarily. Maybe the kid takes the game very seriously and actually made a fair but competitive card.
...Aw, who am I kiddin'? It's probably broken.

I would like to see it too. The art sounds alot like My Body As A Shield. Also, he requested 4Kids to make it? But Konami is in charge of the cards...

Good point. It is probably like those discount cards you find at dollar stores.

I'm sure there's more to the story once you get down the the nuts and bolts. Make-A-Wish didn't just look up "Yu-Gi-Oh!" in the phone book and ask the first person they talked to if they could do this. 4Kids was allowed to release Card of Sanctity as a prize card when they were doing the movie promotions so i'm sure they have a close enough relationship with Konami to put this together.

Come on. . . if you had the chance to create a card just for you, wouldn't you break the HELL out of it?
I know I would.

Don't you guys think that the fighting cancer part was a bit more important than how broken his card was?

davesmp77: Yeah, I am sure that 4Kids could do that if they wanted, but I am guessing the kid wanted it to be so that people could actually play the card. The 4Kids CoS was not playable.

No, that isn't what I mean. I mean that the card will probably not be playable or anything if he had 4Kids make it.

I am glad the kid got through it okay, that makes it a very heartwarming story.
As for the card, I am quite sure it is 100% tourney legal and I am sure 4Kids asked Konami before they made it. I am quite sure Konami was willing to let them produce the card when they found out the reason why.

I bet they just made one copy of it for him.
We know 4-kids, right? Why would they spend alot of money putting out something for one person?
Sounds cool though, and its good the kids okay.

Aaww thats really sweet, 4kids and make-a-wish foundation did a really nice thing for him, I bet the kid was really happy about it, I mean i would. And to fight Liver cancer, wow, thats one strong kid, not many people live through Liver Cancer or cancer period.
I'm glad he's ok and I hope everyone gets to see his very own card.

That a very motivational Story
I *Heart* it
My Grandpa had Cancer and was about to overcome it but then died
Also my Dad's Friend was having a sore throat
So he went to the Bathroom and spit out cancer
He took it to the Dr. and they did tests on it
He's healthy now
But That great for the kid and his Family
Right on 4kids u finally did something right
Anouther cool Idea si at a SJC have them tell the story and show the card
Then have an award that represents him and his family for their strenght in hard times
IDK Maybe it could work
