Nolan says he’ll support Sanders at convention

U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan announced Saturday that he will support Bernie Sanders for president at the Democratic National Convention in July in Philadelphia.

“The Democratic Party is fortunate to have two qualified presidential candidates, both of whom offer substantive solutions to the problems facing Americans,” Nolan, D-Crosby, said in a news release. “I’ve considered a number of factors in making this decision, including the will of Minnesota caucus attendees, specifically those in the 8th Congressional District. Bernie’s message and his authenticity appeals to voters here, and it appeals to me. I’ll be proud to cast my vote for him in Philadelphia this summer.”

Nolan is a so-called “superdelegate” — a delegate free to support either candidate, Sanders or Hillary Clinton, at the convention, and not bound by the results of a caucus or primary. The website Politico reported that Nolan joins two other Minnesota superdelegates to back Sanders — Reps. Keith Ellison and Collin Peterson are the others supporting the Vermont senator who won Minnesota’s caucuses. Clinton, the former secretary of state, holds a large lead in the national superdelegate total.
