Infor to Move HQ to NYC

Next summer, Infor will move its global headquarters from near Atlanta, Georgia, to New York City, the company announced last week. Infor says the move was based in part on the large amount of technology talent in the "Silicon Alley," and that it plans to hire and house more software engineers and graphic designers in its new location.

Infor will move its headquarters from the Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta to the island of Manhattan. It will occupy an office at 641 Avenue of the Americas that features an open, loft-style design that "will fuel product innovation by providing an environment conducive to collaboration and transparency, with no traditional executive corner offices," the company says.

Chief executive Charles Phillips says a strong 2011 is fueling Infor's move to new digs in the Big Apple. "This state-of-the-art facility will enable us to hire and house developers and graphic designers to enhance the user experience and integrate social applications into the workplace, further advancing the speed of business for our customers," Phillips says in a press release. "We also plan to build a customer center that showcases these innovations in an environment as compelling as the technology itself."

In addition to the availability of tech talent in the region, Infor cited new technology campus that the city of New York is proposing to build in conjunction with local universities as a reason for moving. The proximity to its 70,000 customers also played a role.

Infor will keep nearly 500 employees at its current headquarters in Alpharetta, which will continue to serve as its main shared services center, and house finance, human resources, and tax functions. The company has about 8,000 employees stationed around the world.

Infor--the third largest ERP software company in the world--has been not-so-quietly remaking itself since Phillips was brought on a year ago. In addition to a host of acquisitions, bolstered by its $1.83 billion buy of Lawson this spring, the company has overhauled its partner network, rebranded its software under the Infor10 brand, unveiled new cloud offerings, standardized on Microsoft GUI technology, and positioned its software for the social and mobile computing revolutions. It will be interesting to see what Infor does next. IPO anybody?
