State Highlights
Michael F. Bennet, the incumbent Democrat, claimed victory on Wednesday afternoon in his bid for his first full Senate term against Kenneth R. Buck, a Republican district attorney.
Exit polls showed that even when voters agreed on the major issues, they split evenly on which candidate would best address the problems. Seven in 10 exit poll respondents said the economy was the biggest issue facing the country, but Mr. Bennet and Mr. Buck divided their votes.
Economic issues also played a role in the governor’s race, in which John Hickenlooper, the Democratic mayor of Denver, won easily over Tom Tancredo, a former Republican congressman, who ran on a third-party line, and Dan Maes, a Republican businessman who finished a distant third after running a poor campaign.
