SURAT: A 26-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly damaging idols at a temple in Talangpur village on outskirts of the city. The woman broke the idols using an iron rod as she was disappointed over some neighbours framing her brother in theft case.

Sangita Kewat, a resident of Shiv Bhakti Society, was arrested by Sachin GIDC police for allegedly damaging idols at Shree Sairam Temple in Sai Leela Society of Talangpur. Kewat, wife of a textile unit employee, arrived at the temple on Monday and damaged idols of lord Ganesha, Hanuman and Shiva. She fled from the temple but locals recognised her.

Ashok Singh, who had developed the temple, lodged a complaint against Kewat. Following preliminary investigation police registered the complaint on Tuesday. After being arrested, Kewat told police that she was upset with God as her brother was being named by her neighbours in a theft case. She believed that her brother was innocent and god was not helping him.

"It seems the woman is mentally disturbed," said S R Kharadi, police sub-inspector, Sachin GIDC police station.

Police are cautiously investigating the case since the accused booked under the charges of damaging religious place does not get bail. Kewat is booked under Indian Penal Code section 395 (injuring or defiling place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class).
