thumbnail Hello,

After an embarrassing loss to Chile, Mexico's manager and several players apologized to the Mexican fans, saying their performance was far from good enough.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Mexico manager Juan Carlos Osorio and his players apologized to Mexican fans after a humiliating 7-0 Copa America Centenario defeat to Chile.

After going into the halftime break down 2-0, Mexico was helpless to stop Eduardo Vargas and Edson Puch adding to their goal totals. Alexis Sanchez also scored in the second half, as Chile cruised into a semifinal against Colombia.

"I'd like to give my most sincere apologies to the Mexican fans, to all the Mexican people," Osorio said in the news conference after the match. "I think that what happened today was an embarrassment, an accident of soccer. Obviously there are bigger tragedies, but for what this represents on a sporting level I think today was a really poor performance on our part, and I reiterate, a thousand apologies to all the Mexican people and fans."

Multiple players stopped to speak with reporters after the match, with winger Hirving Lozano saying the team spoke in the locker room about owning up to the lopsided loss.

"(We said) that we’ve got to face up to this, that we’ve got to show our face to the media and to the fans, to offer an apology to all of Mexico," he said when asked about the post-match discussion.

There was little to analyze, so comprehensive was Chile's defeat. Osorio, usually prone to long tactical breakdowns and defender Miguel Layun were brief in their thoughts after the contest.

"What happened? It’s something that we all have to think about, that every one of us has to analyze," Layun said. "Today I speak for myself, today I don’t speak for any of my teammates because it wouldn't be fair (to speak for them).

"Today I feel ashamed of myself because of what happened on the field of play, and I want to offer an apology to all the Mexican people who have supported us unconditionally because they didn’t deserve what we came away with today."
