ISLAMABAD: Speakers including literary figures paid rich tributes to Faiz Ahmed Faiz here Friday through recital of his poetry at a ceremony to mark his 105th birth anniversary at National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage, Lok Virsa.
The event entitled “In Memory of Faiz Ahmed Faiz”, was arranged in collaboration with Gosha-e-Adab to celebrate the birth anniversary of influential intellectual, revolutionary poet, and one of the most highly regarded poets of the Urdu language, having been nominated four times for the Nobel Prize for literature.
Speaking on the occasion, Executive Director Lok Virsa, Dr Fouzia Saeed said the services of Faiz Ahmed Faiz for literature and culture are a source of guidance for the coming generations as his poetry has the reflection of deprived segments of the society.
She said Faiz was not only popular in Pakistan but also in Asia due to his work in the field of literature and culture. He was the founding member of Lok Virsa and he did tremendous work for the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage of Pakistan.
“The poets and writers are the cultural and literary asset of any nation and the literature has strong connection with culture as both the culture and literature affect each other,” she said.
Faiz Ahmed Faiz was born on February 13, 1911. His work remains influential in Pakistan literature and arts. Faiz’s literary work was publicly honored when the Pakistan Government conferred upon him the nation’s highest civil award, Nishan-e-Imtiaz, in 1990.
Faiz was the first Asian poet to receive the Lenin Peace Prize, awarded by the Soviet Union in 1962. In 1976 he was awarded the Lotus Prize for Literature. He was also nominated for the Nobel Prize shortly before his death in 1984.
Literary figures, intellectuals and poets recited the poetry of Faiz on the occasion and highlighted his life time services and achievements in the field of literature and arts.
