During the sixtys as a Marconi apprentice I was deligated to work for a group of engineers in a building close by this tower. This particular building was originally constructed to house a single electronic valve of which the proportions were enormous. Measuring aprox 5 ft in diameter and about 25 ft long it was mounted on railway lines in a concrete pit, The pit was covered in lead slabs 6 to 8 ins thick. Although decomissioned by that time it was said that when it was powered up the lights in houses for miles around would go dim.
