When word got out that the Dave Matthews Band had hightailed it to L.A. to record their fourth album with Alanis Morissette producer Glen Ballard, chat rooms worldwide exploded in indignation. Glen Ballard? Needless to say, musicians of the rank of those in DMB weren't about to be pushed into going all slick. But the resulting Everyday, while predictably funky, groovin' and articulate, is also the closest the group has come to making a traditional pop record. Bad news for scarf-dancers. Still, Matthews's status as an unparalleled -- though unheralded -- romantic balladeer gets a serious boost from the meltingly gorgeous Sleep To Dream Her. You can practically hear those panties sliding to the floor.KH
