Questions and answers about codeshare travel

What is a codeshare agreement?
A codeshare agreement is an arrangement between two (or sometimes more) airlines that have agreed to share space with each other on certain flights in their schedules. Each of the participating airlines can sell seats on a codeshare flight as though it is their own, placing their own designator codes and flight numbers on the tickets they’ve sold, but only one airline actually operates the flight.

  • The airline that provides the aircraft, crew and ground-handling support for the codeshare flight is referred to as the operating carrier.
  • The other airlines that sell seats on the codeshare flight are referred to as the marketing carriers.

Have prices changed as a result of the codeshare agreement?
No. Both carriers continue to independently set their own prices. The implementation of the codeshare schedule has not changed Canadian North’s approach to pricing in any market.

Are Pivut fares still available?

  • Yes, we continue to offer Pivut fares to our beneficiary customers on all of our flights and routes (including codeshare flights operated by First Air). Pivut fares can be booked on our website (using promo code PVT14) or by calling us at 1.800.661.1505
  • As Pivut fares are offered at a substantial discount, this fare is not available on all seats.
  • Consistent with traditional airline revenue management, we balance Pivut fare seat inventory with our other fare offerings.
  • Although the current percentage of inventory allocated towards Pivut has not changed, we recommend booking travel well in advance to take advantage of this popular fare.

When making a booking with Canadian North, how can I identify a codeshare flight?

  • The airline operating each flight will be clearly identfied when you are booking your ticket, and will also be shown on your itinerary and boarding pass.

If a ticket that includes a codeshare flight needs to be changed or cancelled, which airline’s policies and fees will apply?
The change/cancellation fees and policies of the marketing carrier (the airline that the ticket was booked through) will apply. All changes or cancellations must be made through the marketing carrier.

If my ticket includes a codeshare flight (and/or interline flight), which airline’s baggage fees, policies and rules will apply?
Per the Canadian Transportation Agency’s interline baggage rules, the baggage fees, policies and rules of the airline whose airline code appears on the first flight of your ticket will apply to you for that flight, and all other flights on your ticket:

  • 5T – Canadian North
  • 7F – First Air
  • AC - Air Canada
  • WS - WestJet

If I am travelling on a ticket booked through Canadian North that includes a codeshare flight operated by First Air, where do I check in for my flight and drop off my baggage?
If you are checking in online, you should check in with the airline operating your first flight of the day (as shown on your itinerary):

If you are checking in for your flight at the airport and/or dropping off your baggage, you should proceed to the counter of the airline operating your first flight of the day. You will be checked through to your final destination without needing to claim baggage and check in again between flights.

The check-in cut-off time and other check-in policies of the airline operating the first flight of the day will apply:

Please note -  if your first flight of the day will be operated by Summit Air on behalf of First Air, please check in at the First Air counter.

If I am travelling on a ticket that include a codeshare flight, will I have to claim my baggage and check in again when transferring between flights operated by different airlines?

No. Canadian North and First Air both offer “through check-in service” on tickets containing codeshare flights. You can check yourself and your baggage through to your final destinations by checking in with the airline operating your first flight of the day.

If I travelled on a ticket that included a codeshare flight operated by First Air and my baggage has been delayed, lost or damaged, which airline should I contact?
Please contact the airline that operated your last flight of the day for assistance or to make a claim.

Before you travel, you should review the following policies of each airline operating flights within your ticket, which will apply to each applicable flight:
