BMC Elections 2017 is expected to get 2.97 lakh new voters who are eligible to exercise their franchise, according data compiled by civic authorities. This number corresponds to a rise of 3.3 per cent in voter count.
Of the new voters, the Mumbai suburbs have seen the number of voters go up by about 2.3 lakh whereas the island city has seen an increase of about 65000 voters.
In 2012, when the last BMC elections were held, it was believed that the city had over a crore voters. But an exercise by BMC official in October this year, which involved deletion of duplicate entries and bogus voters, put the voter population in 2012 at 89.41lakh.
The exercise, first of its kind for the civic body, has also shown that Mumbai at present has 92.38 lakh people who are eligible to cast their votes in next year’s civic polls.
In 2012, only 44 percent of voters cast their votes, which is far below the state average.The election authorities are hoping for a better voter turnout this time around.
