The contribution of D Shankar Singh and B Vittalacharya to the Kannada film industry is immense. Krishnaleela, the film they produced together under the banner Mahatma Pictures, was released in 1947.
The film, directed by CV Raju, had music by D Kalinga Rao. This is the first film in which Kalinga Rao was identified as the music director. The film had quite a few distinctions. Kunigal Prabhakar Shastry wrote his first song for a film with Krishnaleela. Again, it was this film that started the writing career of Hunasur Krishnamurthy.
Another first was SP Varadaraj (brother of Rajkumar) acting in the role of Makaranda. One of the producers, D Shankar Singh (father of Rajendra Singh Babu) got the film re-edited by popular director K Subramanyam and re-released the film.
