Danny Trejo is coming for us all. After first debuting his standalone taco concept along La Brea last year, the Machete star has gone on to open a more sit-down casual Cantina option in Hollywood, and still has his food truck roaming the streets. Next up? Trejo’s Coffee & Donuts, a grab-and-go experience slated for the corner of Highland and Santa Monica Boulevard.
Morning commuters have no doubt seen the pink signage go up above the papered-over former Donut Time space, which closed last year. That location is fairly famous in Hollywood circles as a safe haven for often troubled folks in the area, and was immortalized in the 2015 film Tangerine as a result. A passing tipster sends along the below image of what the place looks like now.
Now it’s slated to fall in line with the growing Danny Trejo restaurant brand. A contact for Trejo’s company says that the place is still a few weeks away, but could be ready to serve by the end of February, offering relatively inexpensive coffees and takeaway morning pastries.
No word yet on hours or any other menu-specific details, but the place is definitely coming along. Add in the popular Salt’s Cure up the street as well as La Carmencita around the corner, and suddenly the somewhat forlorn block has got some big restaurant life once again.
