Juan Carlos Osorio: Germany's 4-1 victory 'unfair' scoreline to Mexico
SOCHI, Russia -- Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio called the 4-1 scoreline of El Tri's defeat to Germany "unfair" after his side fell in the Confederations Cup semifinals on Thursday.
Leon Goretzka netted twice inside the first eight minutes to hand Germany an early commanding position, but Mexico continued to press and had 26 shots compared to Germany's 12 and enjoyed 61 percent of possession, statistics that weren't lost on Osorio.
Germany"I do think the result is unfair," he said after the game. "I think we deserved a better result. Our team kept fighting and moving forward, we really tried to keep our game plan, even if we didn't manage to score, but they had too many opportunities."
Osorio clarified his response by adding that Germany were "fair winners," though he believed the three-goal victory was flattering to the world champions.
But he also acknowledged that Mexico allowed Germany too many opportunities to score.
"They created chances whenever they had space, had five across the back and we simply gave them too many chances," Osorio said.
"They were very efficient and we gave them too much room, but we should have scored at least one or two more goals. We had enough chances to do so. Even after conceding early on we had the mental strength to fight back."
