Funeral of NLD ex-chairman to be held on August 17

The funeral of former National League for Democracy (NLD) chairman Aung Shwe will be held at Yayway Cemetery in Yangon at 10am on Thursday. His body will be cremated at 11am.

The former NLD chairman died of natural causes at the age of 101 at Victoria General Hospital on August 13. His body is being kept on ice at his home after being delivered by the Free Funeral Service Association.

Dr Soe Win Oo, vice chairman of the NLD executive committee for Yangon Region, said Aung Shwe's friends and colleagues from his work in politics and in the military will give commemorative speeches at the funeral.

He also said Aung San Suu Kyi would likely attend the funeral unless a scheduling conflicting were to arise.

President Htin Kyaw and his wife visited Aung Shwe while he was receiving treatment at the hospital.

According NLD records compiled by Aung Shin, an NLD central executive committee member in Monywa, Aung Shwe served as an executive member when the NLD was established in 1988. When the central executive committee was reconstituted, he became a member. He was elected to represent Mayangon Township in the 1990 general election.

When the central executive committee was reconstituted in March 1991, he became party chairman. He served as chairman until 2010.

After the NLD decided not to participate in the 2010 election, Aung Shwe did not return to the party office. He was replaced by Aung San Suu Kyi as chairperson.
