Brazil Win World University Games Gold

Brazil beat Japan 1-0 after extra-time to win WUGS gold, Russia eased past South Africa to the bronze medal, while Great Britain defeated Ireland in the play-off for ninth place.

Extra-time was required to separate Japan and Brazil in their battle for the gold medal, with no goals scored in normal time. Diany Martins eventually broke the deadlock for Brazil, heading home from a corner with 8 minutes left.

Russia beat South Africa 5-0 in the Bronze Medal Match, following a goalless first period. Ekaterina Pantiukhina bagged a brace, Natalia Mashina and Marina Ferorova one each, with Viktoriia Shkova then netting 2 minutes after coming off the bench.

Contesting fifth place, the USA hit South Korea with two goals in as many minutes, as Madison Irwin and Jessica Ayers scored in the latter stages of the first half. Irwin made it 3-0, with Seong Mi Kim getting a consolation.

Mexico’s Diana Evangelista gave them the advantage over Canada in the 19th minute of the game and that proved enough to decide seventh spot.

In the 9th Place play-off, Great Britain were ahead after 2 minutes through an own-goal from Ireland’s Shauna Fox. The second by Olivia Fergusson approaching the hour mark sealed the win for Team GBR.

It was 11th place for hosts Chinese Taipei, after they were the latest to thrash Colombia. Hsiu Chin Yu broke the deadlock on 45 minutes and Chi Ting doubled the lead in first half stoppage-time, before making it 3-0 soon after the restart. Shu Lun Yo and Ya Han Lin then got on the scoresheet to take the final score to 5-0.

Argentina had previously been confirmed as finishing 13th and last.
