Yes, Saturday evening funsters, it’s edition #438 of ARIA Chart Watch.
And can you believe it, we’ve got action at the top of both the ARIA singles AND albums chart this week. We’ll tell you who’s bagged both spots, along with selected highlights from the 99 positions below them right here.
SINGLES
Bye Tay Tay!
Seems like Taylor Swift’s global smash ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ is no match a tender ballad by an English favourite.
Sam Smith claims the spoils on this week’s ARIA singles top 100, premiering at No.1 with his new single ‘Too Good At Goodbyes’.
Amazingly, it’s the singer’s first No.1 single in Australia, after the No.11 peak for ‘I’m Not The Only One’, No.5 for ‘Stay With Me’ and No.3 for ‘Lay Me Down’.
Or course, in debuting in top spot, Sam knocks off Taylor Swift’s smash ‘Look What You Made Me Do’. Not that she’ll mind too much, however, given (a) the track has just notched up a platinum certification for sales over 70,000 units in three weeks and (b) that her other new track ‘…Ready For It?’ is steady in the No.3 position.
Dua Lipa hits the ARIA top five for the very first time with ‘New Rules’ (No.6 to No.4), while the new Zayn single ‘Dusk Til Dawn’ (with Sia) premieres at No.8.
Though he’s not been able to crack the No.1 on this occasion, Justin Bieber’s latest single ‘Friends’ has certainly found a few; it’s now in the collections of more than 35,000 people across the country, achieving a new gold certification for doing so.
Just as it has done on both the UK and US charts this week, ‘1-800-273-8255’ by Logic has surged, improving another seven positions in Australia to now be top ten (No.17 to No.10).
The Lauv love has stalled. His single ‘I Like Me Better’ has spent the past few weeks making great gains on the ARIA singles chart, but the single is steady this week at No.13, albeit sporting a new gold sales accreditation.
Vance Joy’s ‘Lay It On Me’ leaps from No.25 to No.18, another new peak position for it.
Liam Payne’s ‘Strip That Down’ drops five positions (No.14 to No.19), but it does achieve a shiny new third platinum certification, having sold through more than 210,000 copies locally.
His former bandmate Louis Tomlinson also scores some new certification love this week; his single ‘Back Yo You’ hits platinum, though it’s down six to No.21.
And also joining the certification chorus this week is other former One Direction star Niall Horan, whose ‘Slow Hands’ achieves a new triple platinum accreditation at No.22.
Maroon 5 improve into the top 30 in the second week of local chart action for their latest ‘What Lovers Do’ (No.33 to No.28).
Jessica Mauboy’s ‘Fallin’ does precisely what it says on the box (No.29 to No.38), there’s a little gold certification love for Axwell & Ingrosso’s ‘More Than You Know’ (up four to a new peak of No.41) and right there on the precipice of the top 50 goes Hailee Steinfeld, Alesso, Florida Georgia Line and Watt, who debut in the No.50 position with their new collaborative effort ‘Let Me Go’.
Beyond this week’s top 50 now and there’s a new peak of No.52 for the latest Skrillex single ‘Would You Ever’ (No.62 to No.52).
There’s also a new No.55 peak (up 11) for John Gibbons’ cover of Michael Jackon’s classic ‘PYT (Pretty Young Thing)’.
But Selena Gomez’s ‘Bad Liar’ is out of the top 50, losing 12 places from last week’s No.49.
Miley Cyrus’s ‘Malibu’ tumbles 15 (No.50 to No.65), Jason Derulo’s ‘If I’m Lucky’ is down nine from last week’s No.59 debut and Selena Gomez and Gucci Mane’s ‘Fetish’ drops ten to No.71.
But Dean Lewis is into the countdown with his new single ‘Lose My Mind’. It scores a No.73 debut this week.
Miley Cyrus’s chart troubles continue, with her latest single ‘Younger Now’ clearly failing to fire. The song debuted at No.49 a few weeks back, but it’s 17 places lower again this week, dropping from No.60 to No.77.
There’s a U2 debut at No.83 (‘You’re The Best Thing About Me’), a debut for Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Love So Soft’ at No.88 and another for Halsey’s ‘Bad At Love’ at No.91. Charli XCX’s ‘Boys’ is almost gone from the top 100, losing 17 places to No.99.
Last week’s No.73 and No.83 (respectively) debuts for the new singles for both Guy Sebastian and Ricki-Lee have vacated the top 100.
ALBUMS
As the marriage equality postal plebicite is sent out to Australians this week, it might be worth noting that sitting in the No.1 spot on the ARIA singles chart and the ARIA albums chart this week are two proud, openly gay men.
Sam Smith is shining over on the Aussie singles chart with his new track ‘Too Good At Goodbyes’ and here on the Aussie albums chart, it’s Anthony Callea ruling the roost with his new album ‘ARIA Number 1 Hits In Symphony’.
It’s Anthony’s second successive No.1 album (following ‘Backbone’ last year) and his third overall (his self-titled 2005 debut also achieved the feat off the back of the ‘Idol’ competition.
US outfit The National scores with their new album. ‘Sleep Well Beast’ premieres in the No.2 position ahead of a new entry for Jack Johnson’s ‘All The Light Above It Too’, making for an entirely new top three.
That leaves Ed Sheeran at No.4 and Paul Kelly at No.5, ahead of a No.6 debut for the new Kip Moore long player ‘Slowheart’.
The ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 : Awesome Mix Vol. 2’ has done enough in its 21 weeks in the countdown to achieve a fresh new gold sales certification this week, meaning it’s in the homes of in excess of 35,000 Aussies.
Just missing out on top ten berths this week are new albums for Nothing But Thieves (‘Broken Machine’ on debut at No.12), Odesza (‘A Moment Apart’ new at No.13) and Catsplay (‘Happy Hour’ at No.16).
Lana Del Rey’s ‘Lust For Life’ surges (No.38 to No.19), while the new Neil Young album ‘Hitchhiker’ premieres at No.22. A debut too for Arch Enemy’s ‘Will To Power’ (No.26) and another for Thomas Rhett’s ‘Life Changes’ (No.30).
Not great news, however, for the new album from ‘The Script’. After debuting healthily at No.5 on last week’s top 100, ‘Freedom Child’ finds itself cut loose from the top 20, losing 24 places to No.29.
LCD Soundsystem’s ‘American Dream’ is down 21 to No.31, Carole King’s iconic ‘Tapestry’ tumbles 19 to No.32 and The War On Drugs’ ‘A Deeper Understanding’ tumbles 22 places to No.37.
The slides continue, thanks to the new Neil Finn album ‘Out Of Silence’ (No.12 to No.46), though we expect that to pick up a little soon with the impending release of the physical edition of the LP.
Katy Perry’s Witness’ also loses ground (No.29 to No.47), but with her national tour kicking off throughout the week, the ‘Greatest Hits/Interpretations’ of Tina Arena makes its way back into the top 100 at No.48.
Drake enjoys the ‘Views’ from the top 50 again (No.81 to No.49), but Nickelback’s ‘Feed The Machine’ does not (No.26 to No.53).
Vera Blue’s ‘Perennial’ drops 21 (No.34 to No.55) and the ‘Baby Driver’ soundtrack slumps 28 (No.30 to No.58).
There’s a splash of love for the ‘Twin Peaks’ soundtrack (new at No.62), but ‘The Very Very Best Of Crowded House’ dives 26 to No.70. Lil Uzi Very’s ‘Luv Is Rage 2’ also diving… down 29 to No.72.
Dustin Lynch’s ‘Current Mood’ spends its first week on the ARIA top 100 countdown in the No.73 position and The Belonging Co’s ‘All The Earth’ spends its at No.95.
Dixie Chicks’ ‘DCX MMXVI Live’ spent just one week in the top 100 – and that was at No.20.
