Damascus, Syria – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Wednesday, after meeting with the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, that he appreciates Russia’s participation to resolve the Syrian crisis, and will deal positively with the efforts of the Russian government to establish a dialogue between the Syrian government and the “national opposition”.

Assad said, according to the regime-linked news agency SANA, that Russia proved its respect to the sovereignty of states and international conventions as well as its support to the peoples’ legitimate right to self-determination.

“We are positive towards the Russian efforts aimed at finding a political solution to the crisis,” Assad was quoted by SANA as saying.

The Russian Deputy FM has reportedly passed a “verbal message” from the Russian President Vladimir Putin to the Syrian President in which he expressed “Russia’s support” to the Syrian people in the face of the terrorist attacks.

Bogdanov emphasized that the United States is familiar with Russia’s efforts to find a solution to the Syrian crisis, saying: “We are in contact with our American friends.”

“Russia submitted a proposal to the Syrian government and the opposition to come to Moscow in order to hold peace talks,” he said.

Bogdanov has recently met with the Secretary General of the Lebanese party of Hezbollah, Hasan Nasrullah, discussing the Syrian crisis and the role of Hezbollah in the conflict.

On Sunday, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister held a meeting with the opposition leader and head of the Syrian National Coalition (SNC), Hadi al-Bahra, and stressed the Russian readiness to help Syrian parties reach a political solution and end the three-and-half year conflict.
