Christening ceremonies for the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, the John F. Kennedy, were held at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. on May 27, 1967. President Lyndon B. Johnson spoke before an audience of about 35,000. Caroline Kennedy, age 9, christened the ship named for her late father, breaking the bottle of sparkling wine on her second swing. She was joined on the christening platform by her mother, Jackie; her brother, John Jr.; and the president of the shipyard, D.A. Holden. After the ceremony, the carrier was scheduled to undergo a year of outfitting.
