GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Pitching, John A. Logan College baseball coach Jerry Halstead said, had been his team's forte all season.

It was at the plate where the Volunteers struggled during the last two games of the 45th Junior College World Series.

After garnering one hit in falling 10-0 to Wallace State (Ala.) Monday, John A. Logan scattered six hits in Tuesday's losers bracket game. They weren't enough as the Volunteers were eliminated by Lamar (Colo.) Community College 7-0.

The game shaped up as a battle of pitchers for six innings.

Lamar's Brandon McCarthy, 11-0 entering the game, gave up two hits in two of the first three innings, including Logan leadoff batter Shawn Yarbrough's fifth hit of the tournament. It marked the 10th consecutive time Yarbrough reached base in the last three games.

But McCarthy, who picked up his school-record 12th win, got out of the first inning with a double play and left two runners stranded in scoring position in the third.

His counterpart, Herrin's Chad Mulholland, scattered three hits through the third.

Lamar got on the board in the fourth, leadoff hitter Jason Cox singling, advancing on an error and scoring on a sacrifice fly.

Still suffering the effects of an illness last week, McCarthy "felt drained in the third." Then he found his rhythm.

"I was prepared to battle in a 1-0 game," McCarthy said. "I just tried to keep it going."

The Runnin' Lopes gave themselves some breathing room in the seventh. Pinch hitter Hal Whitacre doubled down the left-field line to score Andy Scholl from second. Whitacre's pinch runner, Todd Morben, scored on Pat Harris' two-bagger to right-center and Harris followed Morben home on David Kiefer's base hit to left.

"We fed off (Whitacre's hit)," said Lamar coach Scott Crampton.

That chased Mulholland from the mound after 108 pitches and five strikeouts.

Lamar added another run in the eighth and two more in the ninth off relievers Adam Townsend and Bobby Coomer.

"The whole year our pitching's been on and we've kind of fed off our hitting," McCarthy said. "Once the runs started coming, it was a relief."

Mulholland (4-6) suffered the loss as the Volunteers ended their season 37-21.

"Everybody (here) swings the bat well," Halstead said. "It's a hitter's tournament."

The Vols garnered only seven hits total in its two losses after a 15-9 win over Cowley County (Kan.) Saturday in which the Volunteers had 14 hits, seven for extra bases.Lamar advances to this afternoon's consolation-round game at 3 p.m.
