THIS JUST IN . . .
With the Beatles belting out ``A Hard Day's Night'' from 1964, WWSO-FM last week was born again as ``Oldies 92.9 - The Greatest Hits from the '70s and '60s.''
The station today sells itself as ``the soundtrack of your life.''
Oldies radio is back on the FM dial, which should please the Baby Boomers immensely. They felt disenfranchised 11 months ago when WVKL-FM gave up its ``Kool 95.7'' oldies' signature for adult rhythm and blues - ``Smooth R&B; from Yesterday and Today.''
Feeling the pain of those who've gone without the music of the 1970s and 1960s on FM, Andy Graham, general manager of the Hampton Roads Radio Group, decided this month to convert WWSO-FM from ``Soul Classics 92.9'' to ``Oldies 92.9 - The Greatest Hits from the '70s and '60s.''
Hello, Creedence Clearwater Revival. Bring on ``Who'll Stop the Rain?''
``We found a great demand in our market for the oldies,'' said Graham, who admits that WWSO-FM wasn't lighting up the market as ``Soul Classics 92.9.''
``We were not a huge ratings success. In last summer's ratings we were 12th among listeners 12 and older, and 14th among listeners 25 to 54. They were two of the factors that led us to make the change.''
That change brought casualties. ``We laid off the program manager and the entire on-air staff,'' Graham said.
Radio today is a high-wire act. Some years, you're the Flying Wallendas. …
