Professor Ghil’ad Zuckermann of the Department of Linguistics at the University of Adelaide, working with Professor Alex Brown of SAHMRI, has been awarded a five-year grant of more than $1.1 million.
The NHMRC grant is for “examining the impact of language reclamation on social and emotional well being among the Barngarla”.
This transdisciplinary project, administered by the University of Adelaide, is the first of its kind globally in exploring whether there is quantitative evidence for linking language reclamation to improved social and emotional well-being.
The project will focus on the Barngarla Aboriginal people of Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, with implications expected for language reclamation, revitalization and reinvigoration movements all over the world.
