the date only matters for me to know when you're posting it, when an old game came out is of no use to me. I need to know when to check if it's been posted so I can remove it from the list, that's what I need these dates for :)

Pardon me if the answer was in the OP and I didn't see it, but how does this apply to games that are already out but never got an OT? For instance, I was kicking around the idea of making an Early Access OT for an Early Access game called Tower Unite that is already available for play, but just doesn't have a thread on Era or a release date as of yet.

Although the devs haven't as yet posted officially a definitive release date (and have postponed the release a couple times already, hence why my claim was up for a while previously) the word I heard last in discussions is the early access updates were being delayed due to the devs mentioning it becoming harder to maintain the public-facing builds, and it was believed there wouldn't be many more until release (which coincides with the launch of an entirely new story mode developed in the non-public builds). Whether this means an end of 2017 release or into 2018 isn't clear but posting the claim all the same as the OT is already pre-made (with just a few further adjustments necessary wrt certain updates), and to avoid potential confusion should release arrive and no claim found present in this thread.

Yo TheMoon I was thinking of making some sort of a languages OT for people learning foreign languages, resources, recommendations, etc. Wasn't sure if I need to claim a Hangouts thread here or if I'm good to make it and post it.

Claims mainly exist for "new release" type things (games, movies, events, etc) for which multiple people might want to create an OT, hence we have this procedure to organize who gets to post it and who is possibly collaborating, etc. If you just wanna make any broad topic OT, a claim isn't necessary. Just make sure someone hasn't already posted the same thing.
I'll definitely be getting the gaming laptop OT running over here, once I have thread posting privileges.

This is just a thought but something I always wanted to do on GAF, but never even got around to suggesting was attempt to create an OT dedicated to gamedev career development and mentoring. Do you guys think that would be possible here on resetera? The intent of the thread would be to give provide a little bit of info about the various pathways into the games industry, and provide forum readers a point of contact in various fields, where they could ask practical questions about the industry and help other gaffers both understand the industry, and what they need to do break into it. It would require a list of industry members willing to take on a few mentees, and the OT creator could act as a gatekeeper (preventing mentors being messaged by everyone on the forum). Thoughts on that idea? Are there enough people working in the games industry, across various fields, to make something like that work? I'm a User Researcher working in games, so I'd be willing to volunteer advice from that angle.

Yes, don't misplace this thread again. One of the main problems about making OTs is that they are a good pillar of the community but, how they are made, claimed or even posted is not in the place where the threads are posted. Keep this on the main community hub, please. Want help with those?
