So beautiful!! Yeah, I like hip/thigh tattoos too (I hope so, since I'm thinking of getting one) but I don't know anyone with one there so I'm overthinking it.

Oh cool! That's the placement I'm leaning towards. I like that I can make exposing it optional, since it has a lot of personal meaning and I don't want to have to explain it to people24/7.

I almost want to be like yeah, well my fiancee read your "wife's" opinion and doesn't agree.

But the truth is she got bored of me reading her Frustrating Internet Things™ a long, long time ago hahaha.

Not as many people ask me about my tattoos as I would think. When I get a new one then a few people will ask about it, but besides that the only other two people who have were an awkward waiter trying to flirt with me and some young woman I met at a wedding rehearsal.

I'm sure YMMV though, and it's probably more likely to draw attention if you don't also have blue hair :P

  5. Pretty much! If the SO wants to get an account and post their thoughts, then fine (SPOILER: this never happens).

It's also kind of amusing how it's never "my sister" or "my mom". I've only ever seen this being a woman this poster claims is their SO, so this pretty much amounts to "100% of the women who would marry me think being objectified by me is OK - let's extrapolate this to all women!" Nope lol

To be fair, unless you want to admit to living with your parents (oh no! that'll make me look weak) then it's more likely your SO will be readily available to ask a question than your sibling or parent.

Oh man, I was never stopped on the street so much as the year that I had pink hair. It was a weird experience for me, but the compliments were nice.

It's not that I would even mind people asking me occasionally, but I had one friend who was asked constantly about her tattoo and she hated it. I saw it happen to her more than anyone else I know. It was sort of bizarre.

    Actually evil.

This has been bubbling for a while and rather than make a new thread that might attract some very unwanted attention I will post here. I am really disappointed that tone seems to count for more than content when it comes to moderation. It seems that as long as someone isn't personally insulting a member directly, they will either get away with it or at worst get a warning or a 24 hour ban, the same punishments dealt to "drive-by" reaction gif posts and petty console war crap. I don't think shit posts about the Xbox not having any games are on the same level as MRA bullshit like the below post:

    Please be better Era.

Yeah, I was just telling one of my friends that the bans here seem to be a slap on the wrist, just a day or two most of the time. He mused that it's probably a progressive system... get a couple warnings, then a short ban, then longer bans. Far be it from me to claim to be an expert on moderation, but it doesn't seem like enough to stymie disingenuous posters and guys who give no indication that they intend to improve. Two days later and they're back at it.

    edit:
I don't want to just complain though. I had an amazing Christmas. Probably the best one in recent memory. Everyone was so nice and good to each other, and my dad wrote me a really sweet letter and recommitted to loving me and embracing who I am instead of who he wants me to be :)

This and the creepy as hell posts in the “Taiwanese bikini crane game” and “Teabagging children’s elves” topics have convinced me that ResetEra is never going to be anything more than a boy’s club and tbh I’d probably get heckled for being an “SJW”, or banned, for calling them out on it if I stayed ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Every gaming related site is pretty much a boys' club until proven otherwise. But I'd rather stay on ERA and push back against the wave than not participate at all. Sometimes I roll my eyes or scoff at incredibly bad posts, but most of my time here is enjoyable rather than not.

Warnings and temporary bans aren't something to be taken lightly. The staff sees the history of every warning and temp ban for that user and it weighs heavily on their profile, it may seem like a slap on the wrist, but it's definitely more serious than that, especially when it concerns the matter of what that person you quoted was banned for.

Also, if someone comes back from a ban and continues doing the same thing then that is pretty serious and they will most likely be banned for longer or permanently banned.

  36. I started Arkham Knight earlier today and I'm not really feeling it all that much. The story does nothing for me so far, the game isn't introducing some of the new mechanics like at all, and I feel the level design is basic and sometimes obtuse. I never got stuck on the first two games on what I should do or where to go, but I have three times already in this game. Also, for some reason enemies and random objects are glowing blue.

For sure. There's a lot more accountability here on the part of the mod team, which as a user, I can absolutely appreciate.

I'll take less-lenient punishments with the freedom to openly discuss topics without fear of a dumb permaban for disagreeing with someone over whatever that other site bullshit was.

Yeah I've heard this before and it doesn't really work for me. A bunch of posters who I really like say they don't want to post on Era anymore or are close to giving up on it because of the lax moderation and that really bums me out. We just see persistent offenders who never get more than a warning or a 24 hour ban (if anything at all!), in the meantime good posters are being chased away because they don't have the energy to deal with it or they're worried they will snap and be the ones to get a ban for calling an arsehole an arsehole.

I have to agree with the thoughts about the general "feeling" around here. I didn't really notice it that much before. But, I've just been reading random threads to pass some time, and I've come away disgusted. The video game addiction thread is the one I read last -- some guy telling another guy his wife "can tell you how much to play when she pays the bills" or whatever. What the FUCK? Maybe I've been unlucky tonight, but I'm seeing it everywhere now. Are posts like that report-worthy? On one hand, it's a sad side effect of reading a forum that skews young and male. And it would seriously be a full time job for multiple people to keep this garbage cleaned up. So I guess I'm just venting now. :)

  44. Yeah even as a dude it's a definite change I've noticed too. It seems ppl have figured out how to skirt a ban/warning by feigning being polite/ignorant. I get that the brass want era to be less trigger happy but it's gotta be close to the end of that grace period right? Take the kid gloves off. Even using ignore I notice several threads where over half the replies are from ppl trying to explain why said ppl are wrong/provide facts/links etc and it still derails discussion. It's weird cuz as much as the old place allowed ppl to skirt bans on some subjects they were very hands on when dealing with social issues and yet here seemingly isn't. I find this especially confusing as a lot of the mods here were the ones pushing for progress/respect on the old forums. I dunno if the admins make policy or how that goes and I don't mean to complain as I know it's a hard job, and some of you deal with way too much crap on here as is.

It definitely was a surprise to me, as a moderator. When we launched I was expecting a large "invasion" of users that would do their thing and immediately be banned. I never really considered the large pool of people who actually had an interest in posting on the old site but were banned, and how they now also had a clean slate, the kind of posters that will tip toe over the line at every chance. I truly believe in the warning system and I can say as a moderator we take viewing previous warnings and escalating the severity of punishment seriously. With hope, the kind of posters that create this kind of toxicity will be weeded out, but we have to give everyone a fair chance. It sucks sometimes, but we'll get there. Also, there are some phenomenal members using the report system and it really helps the mods do their jobs, so thank you.

Anyway, the reason I came in here. I'm thinking about getting a nose piercing, just a stud. I've only had my ears done and I'm a little nervous, was wondering if anyone had any insight. Is there a lot of upkeep? does it really hurt? does it feel weird or uncomfortable? Thinking about getting it on the opposite side my bangs go:

  46. Pirate Bae

    Pirate Bae

I had a stud and then later the hoop for several years, before I was forced to get rid of it due to work. I loved it.

It feels weird the first few days, especially with sleeping and all, but I can't say that it's any more painful than getting your ears done. The upkeep is the same, as well. Leave the stud in for X period of time, let the hole become permanent, use a cleaning solution to fight infection. I will say, though, that when I took it out, it took less time for it to start to close than my ears. The cartilage is thicker, and sometimes it was difficult and hurt a bit when trying to put the stud in again. If you can, put it in and leave it. I had to take it out for work and eventually I just said fuck it and let it close. I have the scar now, but it's no big deal, Theres also a bump on the inside of my nose, but I never even notice it these days so it's no biggie.

I appreciate everything you do, I really do, but I very strongly believe that we are not 'going to get there' with current moderation policies.

I've seen people get second chances that they absolutely did not deserve based on the offending post and / or their post history. There are a fair few posters that consistently post shitty things or are shitty to others, but because they never have that one single post that would be considered 'actionable' on its own, they're allowed to get away with it. There have been several posts that I would view as clearly over the line, yet when reported either nothing happens or I get told that it is 'unactionable' - one of the more recent of these was a poster continuing behavior in one thread that he was told to stop by a member from the mod/admin team and then warned for for continuing anyway in another (now locked) thread.

    An example that I feel comfortable giving here because the person in question is perma-banned now anyway;

In the Jim Sterling thread, someone called Jim an 'obese cuck'. The user got a perma-ban, not for that insult, but for being an alt account. Why wasn't the content of the post itself enough for a perma-ban? Why should someone who makes an unprovoked direct attack on another member of this forum, using alt-right terminology, be welcomed back at any point? Why should I feel comfortable posting in a thread where they are posting too? This wasn't a heated debate about something controversial - it was an unprovoked hateful attack. That they would've been allowed to come back at any point if they hadn't been an alt-account just sends me a message that unprovoked hateful attacks like that are OK so long as you 'don't do it again'. I know that that isn't the message you want to send, but it is the message that I receive.

I get the desire to give people a second chance. I really do. I understand why it is important. But you should also be able to recognize that some people just clearly do not deserve a second chance, let alone a third or fourth.

One user on this site has gotten a warning, a 1-week ban, a 48-hour ban, and has several questionable posts in between. He decided to continue his trollish and shitty behavior this past weekend. I would have assumed his chances were more than spent at this point - he had been repeatedly warned / banned for the same behavior and consistently returned to that behavior after returning from those bans, something that already should've provoked a much harsher response when he did it again after his first ban.

Yet he was just given another chance - another temporary 1-week ban. Why?

I reported that member through their profile with the request to make their current ban permanent. I was told that it had been discussed by the moderation team, who passed it on to the admin team, and now an admin told me that the mod team captains will look at it. At this point I have very little faith that anything will actually happen before the current temporary ban expires. And the pessimist in me says that when it expires I'll probably get told that they now can't 'just ban him outright' and that I'll just have to wait until he inevitably resumes his shitty posting behavior.

All of this just pushes me away because I just don't know anymore. I'm hesitant to report things because I simply do not know where the line is for the mod team to consider something 'actionable' - I only know that that line clearly isn't where it should be. I'm posting less, because I don't feel like putting energy into this forum when people can just be shitty and get away with it with the frequency they do now - because I just don't feel that current moderation policies are in the long run going to create a community that I want to be part of.

I've talked a lot about this on Discord, so I'm sure this has reached you in some way already, but I felt like posting this here too to add my voice to others.

    Anyway,

    Sorry for that rant.

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. <3

edit: Some minor spelling / text fixes.

    edit2: After talking back and forth for a bit, some clarification on the 'specific' examples I provided above;

The 'obese cuck' poster would have been permanently banned for the contents of the post, it is just that the alt account was caught at the same time the request for extension to permanent ban was filed, and extending to permanent for the alt account was apparently easier / quicker.

The second case is still being discussed internally and their ban was already extended to a month (though the ban message hadn't yet been updated to show that).

I'm happy to have been provided these explanations for these specific instances (as well as some general conversation on mod policy), but my dissatisfaction with current moderation policy in general still stands. I'm glad that this voice is being heard and hope that it will lead to some internal discussion. I think there's a lot of space to move while still keeping plenty distance from how things were done on the old site.

I agree with Windrunner and Llyrwenne. Low quality posters continuously get a pass and come back after toothless bans to keep posting the same BS. Then you get these same assholes claiming that the "hive minds" have created this "echo chamber" and are constantly "virtue signalling" and they just whine all day.

It's easier to get a ban for shitposting a gif than it is to question another individual's personhood. Clear alt right and MRA dogwhistles often don't even get a warning.

I'm getting more and more reluctant to use the report function too.

I get annoyed that alt right rhetoric and sexism, which I thought wouldn't be tolerated here, often is. It's diminished my desire to contribute anything to this site.

And side note to all the disingenuous "conservatives" that keep whining about this place--I'd personally love to be able to have reasonable discussions that can fall outside the leftist spectrum. But y'all are only interested in whining about how your poorly researched views are challenged and the only conservatism y'all want to discuss is the kind that diminishes the rights of others. It's like you want to feel like you're the one persecuted while you're persecuting.
