    Blog
It’s been more than 1000 days since we first released Rocket League on July 7, 2015, and thanks to YOU, our avid community, we’ve welcomed even more fervent players to our ever-growing soccer-meets-driving video game. What started as a small passion project and sequel to Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, has turned into a monster success; surpassing our wildest dreams and even moving beyond what we had expected coming off of last year’s big “two-year” celebration!

It’s crazy to think that it was 10 years ago this coming October that SARPBC first came to PlayStation 3 and that three years have passed since Rocket League forever changed our lives for the better (and we hope it’s changed yours’ for the better too); but here we are – 46 million players strong, with the game readily available on four major platforms with a free-to-play version scheduled for release in China later this year. More than 2.5 Billion games of Rocket League have been played in its lifetime (that’s up more than a BILLION over last year!) and we have so many possible customization combinations in the game, that we stopped publicly counting at “hundreds of trillions” because the number is so big, it almost sounds made up (but it isn’t).

Normally with this anniversary post, we point out all of the things we have planned for the rest of the year, but we’ve heard your requests for more regular information and have tried to keep you up to date on a much more regular basis prior to posting this – so be sure to check out our Rocket League Roadmap right here (wow, that’s a lot of alliteration) along with our recent posts on our upcoming Rocket Pass and incoming changes to XP and Level Progress for the full story. If you have friends on Xbox or Steam who haven’t played Rocket League yet, we’re having a Free Weekend starting July 5 thru July 9 and a special Third Anniversary / SARPBC 10th Anniversary event July 9 thru July 23 that will give you all sorts of cool limited-time items and even a Throwback stadium inspired by the original Battle-Cars!

If you want to celebrate Rocket League with us in the real world, you can do that too in our hometown of San Diego, California at Petco Park – where we’ll be hosting a FREE birthday bash on July 19 from 3pm to 9pm. We have all sorts of partners, friends, and colleagues scheduled to appear, including Greg Miller and the crew from Kinda Funny, WWE Superstars Xavier Woods and Becky Lynch, Pro players from North America and Europe, and plenty more!

Oh, and speaking of Rocket League pros, the last year has been an amazing one for Rocket League Esports with more coolness on the horizon. The RLCS Season 4 World Championship in Washington D.C. and Season 5 World Championship in London were seen by MILLIONS of viewers all over the world, while the Universal Open has now returned along with new Psyonix-sponsored community events like The Climb, to bring our game to even more players, teams, and audiences than ever before! And while we’re not officially announcing anything just yet, we CAN tell you that the future of Rocket League Esports is brighter than ever – as the next year of RLE will bring higher prize pools, more opportunities for players of all skill levels, and a much more holistic approach to our Worldwide esports program – both in-game and out. We’re excited to start sharing those plans with you in the coming months, so stay tuned for more soon!

As always, we can’t thank you enough for your ongoing support and passion for our game. YOU make this possible and for that we are truly grateful, humbled, and appreciative. Here’s to another great year of Rocket League and here’s to another great year spent playing and enjoying gaming with you.

    Respectfully,

    Psyonix

P.S. Come on now, you didn’t think we’d post our yearly celebration blog without an updated infographic did you? It’s tradition! Enjoy!

Wow didn't know Xbox numbers are that good!
Also 5% switch ownership in such a short time seems good.

Happy being able to play with 61%, but I wish I could play with everyone!

How's the Switch port these days? I knew initially it looked pretty rough, any updates since then?

  4. Can't see the infographic. Is there a link to it? I didn't even see it on their website.

Xbox is closer to PS4 than what I expected. Incredible numbers all around.

i actually double dipped, first on Xbox and then Switch.

    Xbox One (35%) + Switch (5%) > PS4 (39%)

    Crossplay’s already winnng.

Less people on wifi, the better.

  11. So 5% would mean a couple million for Switch right?

Most consoles in general are likely connected by wifi. The massmarket doesn’t know better.

Do you really think ps4 users are mostly on lan? All my PS4 friends use wifi ... (and I hate it)

Really? I've been having tons of issues with stuttering, and for half of the online matches the camera is stuck at an overhead view for the first 10-15 seconds. Have they fixed this? I don't have any of these issues on other Switch online games, so I don't think it's my system or Wifi.

No, but at least there's a chance.

I play on PC anyway. PS4 version feels a little laggy to me.

Wow, didn't expect the Crossplay playerbase to be bigger than the Ps4/PC one. Great to see, but would love to have everyone together.

Well when I play my switch online, I'm always docked and use ethernet. So there is also a chance [IMG]

Shocked that XB1 is so close to PS4. Was it ever given away as part of Games with Gold? Even if it was, PS4 should be higher.

The graph shows the total of active users for the past 12 months per system, not the total amount of owners of the game per system.

I’m also surprised Steam is so low compared to the X86 twins. I’d have figured it was the top release?

The Switch port isn’t even a year old yet. 5 of those 12 months for active users it was at zero.

Putting it on PS+ was a brilliant idea ... When I look at the number of purchased cars when I play, it's clear they are selling goods. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of PS+ players also bought it on another platform.

I've probably put $10 or $15 in that I wouldn't have otherwise. It's a great way to wind down at the end of the day -- I play a couple rounds of rumble almost daily.

It hasn’t been. Although they did have a deal where you get the game free when you bought 3 months of gold a while back.

Yeah a little surprised that Xbox numbers are so close to PS4 also.

No, it did really good on its own, and the X patch is still scheduled for later this year...

  32. It's great now. Runs at 900p docked and 720p portable, at a solid 60FPS. Rarely, if ever, does the resolution drop if you are not using splitscreen. The only thing is, you need a pro controller. The Joy Cons are fine for 99% of the games out there, but not for Rocket League. The sticks are just too small.

Kind of ridiculous that there is still not an Xbox One X enhanced version yet considering the PS4 Pro and PC versions already have been around for a while. I understand it may not be a priority but it matters to Xbox players which is not a insignificant group.

Since this thread is celebrating the game I would like to add that the game has a fantastic pro scene. It's fantastic to watch high level play and the game has so much depth that the game is still evolving. Hell, ground and aerial ball handling were amazing enough at first and now there are people regularly pulling off ceiling shots, multiple flip resets, wave dashing shenanigans, etc etc. The play has changed quite a bit over the past few years.

Kind of amazing that PS4 and XB1 are so close together despite the gap in console install base and that the game was part of PS+.

They moved development on the Switch inhouse and chose to make improvements over that version over the X update I believe. Ultimately I think they made the right choice. Xbox One version runs well, Switch version at the time had issues.

Don't get me wrong, I still play on Xbox but it feels long overdue. I expected the port would be available at or around the launch of X. I know these things aren't easy though.

I didn't know they were trying a f2p version in China. I'm glad they're trying it there first to see how it works out. I've slowly started to come around to wanting the game to go fully f2p though. I think PSY would be very smart about monetizing things (ala Fortnite) and it would just grow the player base along with it's esports presence.

Dont understand why they would release a free to play version when the game has 46 million players that payed for it (minus the PS plus downloads.)

They still earned money when the game was free for Plus. It wasn't a bad love at all.
