Okay I’m playing now and I see no bright purple spot on the ground when a zone shot is coming at me. I see the purple traveling with the ball. Is that what you mean? Also, I’m either too early or the ball hits my body 99% of the time. What do I do differently here? I can’t get this timing down at all.

  3. Blocking a zone shot with a trick shot is incredibly difficult, and I don't think I've ever even done it.

I just slow down time and block it manually.

My most anticipated Switch game this year and it's disappointing. I haven't played in almost a week.

I kinda now regret having purchased it digitally.

I put it down after a few hours and I'm going to come back in 6 months and see if they updated it or added dlc. It feels like it's really close to being a good game and I don't want to burn out on it on the off chance that they work on it some more. The multiplayer is decent, but overall it should have been priced like Rocket League. Honestly even then Rocket League would still be a better deal because it is more polished and replayable.

Yes, the illuminated ground is very useful for timing the block. There's a bright center, run up to that center spot and press the button and you should time it correctly.

They reused assets and still managed to provide a lackuster experience, amazing.

Camelot can't catch a break, sadly. One day they will get the investment needed to make a great game again, I hope.

Yeah this is why I didn't buy the game in the end. But apparently trying to warn other people about it in a new thread was frowned upon so it was locked with a "go post on the OT" message or whatever. Good to let more people know before they drop money expecting an actual RPG mode or anything.

Eh. I'm having fun with online, which is why I bought it. The tennis is still extremely fun.

    See here:

Good or bad they didn't break any promise really.

The reality is that we'll likely never see the RPG modes of GBC or the GBA games again, there's one reason they always sold less than their console counterparts and I don't think that they're selling a Tennis game on Switch with the single player content as a priority.

They should tho. Golf Story shows that there is a market for that still. I dunno if Camelot still has it in them to do it, but if not Nintendo should find some dev who does.

I must be CRAZY. I don’t see any illumination on the ground, only around the ball itself in the air. By the time it’s on the ground, I’ve missed it.

For me, the games core tennis mechanics (regardless of how “really fucking good” it is) isn’t enough to justify a purchase. Especially when there’s a lack of thoughtful game modes & content that can justify its $80 Canadian price tag. I got much more value out of OwlBoy & Battle Chasers, and both were half of MTA’s price tag.

Ya, adventure mode is kind of a throwaway. I just login to get a few online matches in every once in a while and honestly there's not much incentive to win online either other than leaderboards. I really hope they add some more unlocks to the game cause it does feel incredibly bare bones.

Gameplay is still fun though and I don't completely regret my purchase.

Hell if I remember correct, I think I had more fun with Hot Shots Tennis on psp back in the day.

Really wanted to enjoy this but I just can’t get it.

I'm so glad I didn't buy this. I loved the GBC story mode and was hoping this was going to have something like it. I'll put that money I would have spent on it on Octopath Traveler.

The bigger issue is the barebones options for multiplayer and AI free play. You can't even play a proper set FFS.

Lot of press articles are saying that when the game was announced iirc, it doesn't matter though for me RPG singleplayer is the biggest draw, same with the Mario Golf. I'll get it when it's cheaper in the future.

I wish they gave Camelot a chance to develop an RPG again.

the weird difficulty spikes/things that feel completely random are annoying. Couple that with the no instant "retry" option and I haven't been back to it in a while.

This is the darker side of Nintendo: creating low quality rush jobs to fill the gaps left by absence of third party. 3DS had awful lot of them and if third party presence remains nowhere to be seen, Switch get its own huge share, starting with this one.

    Save us, third parties!

I see it as a necessary tutorial before jumping online. The problem is that they didn’t market it like that and everyone had high expectations.

For sure it teaches you how to perform blocks.

Played it coop on saturday and two of my friends did hate it. Can you even choose teams yourself? We always got put randomly in teams which sucked with different skill levels

  31. You're going to have to do better to convince me they actually wanted to drop series staple modes like Ring shot.

Nintendo are the ones who chose to compare it to the GBA RPG modes in advertising, stating it was the first mode like it since the GBA game. So it'stheir fault for setting that expectation.

Should I even bother with this game if I don't plan to play online? I hate multiplayer and would only get it for the singleplayer content...

I guess I should go back to the GBC/GBA for my Mario Tennis fix.

It is surprising how shallow it is. I appreciate that its a big step up from Wii U, though...

Mario Golf World Tour was way deeper and I was hoping for something nearly as fleshed out as that:

I played a few levels of the story mode and never played the game again. It completely turned me off. I should probably just skip to the actual tennis part of the game.

Holy crap, I was never so not in agreement with so many people here :D I love Adventure Mode. I love that not every mission is just normal tennis match and I love how hard some challenges are. Sure, no customization, no story - but who cares? It's a Mario Tennis. Mind you, I have not played the GBA game.

Yep, I'm selling this in a few days.
I bought it for my daughter originally but it was too hard for her.
Then I tried it myself and the story mode is useless and I'm not interested in online or vs mode so it's going.
First Switch game I sell actually..

GBC Mario Tennis was the pinnacle. GBA Power Tour was amazing as well. As much as I hoped for something even remotely close to this, I feel like as more information got revealed, it was necessary to keep expectations low.

Thank goodness for simple tournaments online - that’s where I’ve been spending almost all my time with the game, and it’s a blast to have a competent tennis game to just pick up and play. Even if the rallies are insanely long!

Mario Tennis Aces is in no way a low quality title. It's actually one of the best games on the series, if not the best in terms of actual gameplay, graphics, multiplayer and personality.

No, it isn't. They just said that for the first time in years a Mario Tennis had a story mode and with RPG elements. That was it. The GBA being in there was just to point out the last one.

If it was bad is another story. What was said is in there, a story mode and RPG elements.

If you choose to believe that, well, ok. But you can't expect everyone to agree with you. IMO is utterly naive to think they didn't know what expectations they were setting. On a personal note, I'll say I never expected something as good as the GBA game, but then...

Oh, it is bad. Irrelevant RPG elements just to tick the checkbox. Terrible, barebones presentation and it's not just the campaign, but the lack of content and options. It shows a lack of care I didn't expect from Nintendo.

I've actually been learning a lot playing the adventure mode. As someone who sucks at Tennis games, the levels forced to me understand how important it is to control ball placement, how useful retuning to the center after returning the ball might be, how to get the timing right to block zone shots, etc. It doesn't do a great job of explaining these things to you, but without getting better at these I wasn't able to pass the levels. Not being able to retry is annoying, but I'm pretty sure it's there so you don't just grind and grind. The beginning conversation of a level is skippable and the one where you lose isn't for a reason: when you lose, Toad usually gives you hints about what you're supposed to be learning/getting better at to finish that level.

Also, the bowser nets return the ball with a strong "swing" that pushes you back if you don't respond with the correct swing. The star one's let you do zone shots, which obviously let you aim, but also destroy several nets at once. Are you actively trying to not understand the game? This is pretty obvious from trying it once.

As far as online goes, the lack of more options for game duration is absurd but I was actually surprised at how the game lets you easily create rooms and set or search for the rules you want. It seems pretty sturdy and functional, more than usual in a Nintendo game, you can even see your opponents connection status before accepting the match, something missing from most or all of Nintendo's online games.
Other than the duration of the match (which is a pretty big omission), what exactly are the options missing? Because I see people saying the match options are barebones and I see plenty of options, so it kinda seems to me like people are focusing on one missing thing and ignoring everything else.

I haven't finished the game yet, still need to play some more, I agree that the adventure mode is very basic and barebones and that there are a few things missing, but this thread seems disproportionally negative to the game I'm playing, which has really strong core mechanics, plays good, looks good and seems to have a reasonable variety of content.
