OLDEST EANH NOTES.
The oldest bank notes in the world
are the "flvinsr money" or convenient
money, first issued in Cina in 1697 B. C.
f)no Writer tells us that the ancient
Chinese bank notes were in many re
spects similar to those of the present
day, bearing the name of the note, the
signature of the official who used it,
and its value, in both' figures and
words. On the top of these notes was
the following philosophical injunction:
"Produce all you can; spend with eco
nomy." Brooklyn Eagle.

SCHOOL CHILDREN ARE
ASKED TO CUE HELP
As the result of the effort which is
being made by the Oahu Central Im
provement Club for a "cleaner Hon
lulu," the Board of Education has is
sued a letter, a copy of which will be
sent to every school in the city, ask
ing the cooperation of both teachers
and pupils in both private and public
schools in this movement. This wTork
is most strongly urged on the members
of the schools and should have an ef
feet noticeable in the near future.
The letter which is being sent out
by Superintendent Babbitt is as fol
lows: To the Teachers and Pupils of the
Schools of Honolulu.
A general movement for improving
the appearance of the streets of this
city has been inaugurated by the Oahu
Central Improvement Club and the
teachers and pupils in the public and
private schools are asked to cooperate
in the work.
The unsightliness occasioned by
throwing orange peels, banana skins,
scraps of paper and other rubbish on
fho sidewalks, and the menace attach
ed thereto, need no comment. Will
you assist by refraining from such
practice yourself, by discouraging it
in others, and. as far as you can, aid
in clean'ng up places now untidy in
appearane?
A concerted effort on the part of
teachers and pupils to this end will
have an irresistible influence and the
Department urges most strongly your
cooperation.

Superintendent of Public Instruction.
