Potboilers with a political Twist
Ammu Zachariah | TNN | Aug 14, 2013, 11:59 ISTNow, almost a dozen Malayalam movies based on political scams and murders are being planned by some of the leading directors in Mollywood. We take a look at a few head turners. A movie based on the solar scam, which has rocked the political foundation of the state, will no doubt be a crowd puller. Buzz is that Renji Panicker and Shaji Kailas will do a movie based on the subject. Also on the cards is a movie based on T P Chandrasekharan murder case, one of the most heinous political murders in the recent times which brought about significant tremors in the political scene.
Director Moidu Thazhathu has already announced Saghavu T P: 51 Vayasu. 51 Vettu, a movie on the comrade’s life. A similar movie based on the late T Damodaran’s script, which plots a political murder, is rumoured to be directed by I V Sasi. Mammootty will apparently play the lead here. Amal Neerad had earlier announced Arival Chuttika Nakshathram, a period movie set in a political backdrop in 3D. Anil V Nagendran’s Vasanthathinte Kanal Vazhikalil is set in the pre-Independence era and stars Samuthirakani, Mukesh, Siddique and Sudheesh among others. “This is about the political unrest in a village before the Independence. I am trying to make the new generation aware of the fact that what we have received is the result of the blood and sweat of many reformists,” says Anil.
Kalikalam fame Reji Nair had announced a project based on the Delhi gang rape. Titled Nirbhaya, the movie is touted to be a political thriller. He had earlier told us, “I am not focusing on the Delhi incident alone. It’s also about the awakening of the once indifferent youth.” However, Ranjith Sankar shares that a political story need not be based purely on state politics. “It can be centred around family politics too. Unlike in other languages, heroism doesn’t work in Mollywood anymore. But politics is more acceptable since it is a broader topic. And if you look at our news channels, they are highly entertaining than the actual entertainment channels,” says Ranjith.
Ace director Lenin Rajendran, whose next film, Edavapathy, deals with a political subject says, “Political cinema needs deep thought. It’s not easy to make such movies, as you have to be aware of the injustice around you, and should empathise with the victims. Edavapathy is a political movie, which revolves around a group of people; it is about their dreams and relationships,” says the director.
