BEAVER MEADOW

    Ken Pointon and his brother purchased some land on the Whangaparaparoa peninsular, just north of Auckland, in the early 1970's. Ken's brother was an ex steam locomotive engineer, and he proceeded to build a miniature outdoor track complete with steam engine. This was to entertain children, etc., and as part of the installation he erected an old Booth MacDonald windmill to add a touch of nostalgia. A second windmill was later added, and soon the brothers were being asked if they could build windmills for various people.
Ken then started building them in 1977, and called his company BM Industries. It is located at Silverdale and has operated from from 1977 to the present.

• BABY WINDMILLS     - see - D MODEL DIRECT ACTING WINDMILLS
• D MODEL DIRECT ACTING WINDMILLS    Date unknown but well prior 2001. From information available there were at one time 6 models of direct acting windmills. The model number was the wind wheel diameter in feet. D2 and D3 known as 'Baby' mills were listed for swimming pool circulation, fish ponds and header tank pumping. D4 and D5 mills are listed for surface pumping from dams etc, and the other models for general pumping. All had steel fabrication and automatic governing. The main shaft bearings were in an oil bath and a ball thrust bearing was behind the wheel. Needle roller crank bearings with PTFE bushes on the rocker beam pivots. The three smaller models had a fixed stroke and the larger models had a choice of two strokes. Galvanised wind wheel and three legged towers.
• GEARED WINDMILL     Available with 4, 6.5, 8, 10, 12 and 14 foot wind wheels. The 14ft model is possibly no longer made. Oil bath windmill.
• STANDARD GEARED WINDMILL     Available with 8ft, 10ft, and 12ft wind wheels. It is a self governing oil bath windmill with manual head lockout. The tower is 3 legged made of galvanised steel.
• PRAIRIE ECONOMY WINDMILL - Direct action     This direct acting mill has 6.5ft [Model P 600] and 8ft [Model 800] windwheels. The 8ft model is possibly no longer manufactured. The head is cast and steel, with the steel parts being hot dip galvanised. The main shaft uses sealed ball bearings. Special composition bearings are used for the crosshead pulley and pitman arm. All tinware is hot dip galvanised. Two stroke lengths are available. Self governing Ball thrust race turntable, four legged wooden tower. There is a manual system to shut off the windmill for extended periods such as winter.
• PRAIRIE ECONOMY WINDMILL - Geared.     Only 8ft [Model G800] windwheels were available. The head is cast and steel, with the steel parts being hot dip galvanised. The main shaft uses sealed ball bearings. Special compound bearings used for the crosshead pulley and pitman arm. All tinware is hot dip galvanised. Three stroke lengths are available. Self governing Ball thrust race turntable, four legged wooden tower. There is a manual system to shut off the windmill for extended periods such as winter.
• SIMPLEX WINDMILL - Direct action.     This direct acting mill has a 10ft diameter windwheel. It is self-governing with a manual head lockout, sealed ball bearings and all steel parts are galvanised.. The tower is 20ft, made of a single pipe with side stays, pivoted at the base with tilt erection for simple installation. A 12ft example of this windmill was found near Auckland in March 2011. This was the only 12ft example of the Simplex made by the company and was originally erected on Auckland's North shore.

BOOTH - MACDONALD & Co Ltd.

    Formerly George Booth & Sons. Operated the Carlyle Implement & Iron Works, also known as the Carlyle Implement Works. Operational from 1882 - c1955. The address in 1885 is shown as 218 Tuam Street, Christchurch. In 1900 this company were supplying the American made FLINT & WALLING STEEL STAR windmills. - See - FLINT & WALLING in the Australian Section (F-I) for Model details.

• CARLYLE IRON WINDMILL    Circa 1883 - 1893. Bears a strong resemblence to the American made MAST FOOS IRON TURBINE windmill of the same period and uses advertising illustrations used by MAST FOOS. It won the first prize at the Sydney Centennial Show. Exported to Australia [1888]. This was a direct action available in wind wheel sizes from 6 to 14 ft.
• SELF OILER WINDMILL    One of the earliest oil bath windmills anywhere. The design was patented in 1911 by Charles WHITAKER, an engineer employed by BOOTH - McDONALD. It was single geared and operated the pump rod by linkages.
• STEEL STAR WINDMILL    See - (F-I) FLINT AND WALLING.
• TE ANGI WINDMILL    On display at the 1891 & 1894 Otago A & P Society Annual Show. The Te Angi windmill and pump was especially designed for light winds and was described as being of light and graceful appearance. Back geared. A second hand example of this mill in good working order was offered by S. L. Humphries & Co. in 1905.
• TITAN WINDMILL    A small open type direct acting windmill. Some of the fans were as small as 4 foot. It employed a counterweight.
• KIWI WINDMILL    Invented and patented by Mr H. Grieg, a travelling representative for Booth & McDonald & Co. The Kiwi windmill and pump was displayed at both the Egmont and Wellington A & P Association Shows in November 1895, and the Invercargill, Wanganui and Wellington A & P Association Shows in November 1896. It was a light running, self regulating and inexpensive windmill.

DANKS J. & T.

    PROVIDENCE IRONWORKS. Formerly in business in Melbourne, Australia before coming to Christchurch in 1877. Brassfounder, plumber and well sinker. Patentee of the 'Canterbury Well Sinker' and the TITAN windmill. In c1897 the factory had 13,000 square feet of floorspace and employed a considerable number of people. Became THOMAS DANKS in 1899 . Operated at 198, 200 Lichfield St, Christchurch.

    Was DANKS, J. & T. Operated in Christchurch 1899 to 1918. There was a patent application No. 18825 in his name for windmill improvements in 1904.

DUNCAN, P. & D. LTD - (South British Implement Works)

    Peter [1838 - 1907] and David [1832 - 1897] DUNCAN were born at Braidmore farm, near Brechin, Forfarshire, Scotland. Both trained as smiths and fitters. Peter emigrated to New Zealand in 1863, originally partnering Benjamin CORDERY, then Alex SCRIMGEOUR from 1865 as a blacksmith in Lyttelton. He and SCRIMGEOUR moved to Cashel St, Christchurch in 1866. David came out in 1867. Peter dissolved his partnership with SCRIMGEOUR in 1868. The brothers were partners by 1870, but the name 'P & D Duncan' was not used until 1874. Their Cashel St premises were destroyed by fire in 1869 and they moved to Tuam St. By 1885 a branch was established at Ashburton. The company was one of New Zealand's premier agricultural implement manufacturers for many years. P & D Duncan ceased operations at the end of 1986 although the DUNCAN family had sold the business in 1959.

• DUNNS WINDMILL -c1885 - c1901    Open direct action windmill. Duncan on the vane. At least the No. 1, 2 & 3 were paddle bladed. Tripod stand. There may be other variations.

• ELECTRIC WINDMILL    Circa 1902 - c1909. Open steel back geared windmill after an American design. Wind wheel and vane are galvanised. 3 to 6 inch stroke. Used a lever weight for regulation. Manufactured in sizes 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 foot. Fitted to four post wooden or steel towers.
• HERCULES WINDMILL    Circa 1911 - ? Open double back geared mill virtually identical in design to the open geared STOVER/SAMSON from America. Made with 5, 7 and 9 foot windwheels. By 1920 the sizes were listed as 6, 8 and 9 foot. Fitted to either 3 or 4 post steel towers.
• OK WINDMILL    Circa 1914 - c1926. Open direct action with oil reservoirs. From 1918 it had a variable stroke attachment which allowed for 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 inch strokes. Available with 6, 7, 8 and 10 foot windwheels. Used spring regulation.
• OS WINDMILL    This appears to be the last survivor of what were known as 'DUNN'S windmills. Used a lever weight for regulation. Could also be mounted on 3 or 4 post steel towers by 1911. Cast parts.
• PERFECT IRON WINDMILL    Circa 1885 - ? This appears to be a faithful copy of the American LEFFEL IRON WIND ENGINE. Open design made using wrought iron.The turntable used friction rollers and the main shaft used an adjustable governor arm. Rubber cushions were used to prevent sudden jars in blustery conditions. Only one size seems to have been available. Direct action. Employed a self acting brake.
• RING OILER WINDMILL    Geared windmill similar to the ELECTRIC windmill but fitted with long gunmetal ring oiler bearings and oil catchers. Used a walking beam. Available with 4, 6, 8 and 10 foot windwheels.

EADE, Walter

    Listed as a windmill manufacturer at Tuam St, Christchurch in 1906.

EVANS, F.

    Operated in Chancery St, Auckland in 1916. Two models. One a 14 bladed iron windmill and the other with 4 blades.

FERGUSON MANUFACTURING Co.

    Originator of the company was Ross FERGUSON. Prototype built in 1979. The company began selling them in 1980. Operated at 64 Main Road, Kumeu from then to present.

• FERGUSON WINDMILL    Vaneless windmill with a low efficiency wind wheel to allow for using low volume per stroke, constant flow delivery. The first mills produced were all welded fabrication and the head and wind wheel were painted yellow. Later the colour changed to orange. The original design pipe fitting pumps were changed in 1982 to a cast bronze pump of the manufacturer's design. In 1983 the original 6 foot model on a 3.5 metre mast was joined by an 8 foot model on a 6 metre mast. There was an optional extension on the smaller mast to take it to 6 metres. [only three 8 foot models were made] Later castings were used for the wind wheel hub. The first one in cast iron, but subsequently cast aluminimum shrunk onto the shaft since 1991. The windmill has been developed as a kit set and since then all steel parts have been galvanised, or in the case of the hub, shaft electroplated.

HAYES, E. & SONS LTD

    Ernest HAYES was born in Warwickshire, England in 1851 and served a 5 year apprenticeship in millwrighting and engineering . He came to New Zealand in 1882 on the Taranaki with his wife Hannah and son Llewellyn. In 1884 he set up a flour mill at Oturehua which he managed until 1900 as well as running his farm. He began manufacturing in 1895 in the Hayes Engineering Works, Oturehua (originally known as Rough Ridge), Central Otago. In 1905 ths company started producing HAYES wire strainers. Ernest HAYES retired in 1926 and died in 1933. The company moved to a purpose built factory at Templeton, Christchurch in 1952. The business was sold in 1987.

• ? WINDMILL    In 1910 a 6.5m windmill on an 18m tower was made to power the works and later when windmill production commenced this was used as the model. The windmill continued to power the factory until a Pelton water wheel was installed in 1927.
• First production windmill - 1912 -     The first windmill was sold to W.G.BECKER. This was reconditioned c2001 and moved to a site adjacent to the old factory. It is possible that this is what was advertised as the "Hayes Four Cornered Steel Tower Windmill".
• NEW IDEA WINDMILL    This windmill was manufactured from 1920 until about 1950 and was available in the two sizes of 4 foot 6 inches and 6 foot. Another unusual windmill in that although the wind wheel was mounted either on a conventional tower or a fabricated post, the actual wheel was bracketed on both sides in a frame which pivoted.They used a side vane and some sort of weight on a chain? for regulation. Advertising talks about a "Improved New Idea Windmill" and this could have been a updated version.
• REVOLVING TOWER WINDMILLS    These were introduced in 1916 and were made in sizes from 3 to 8 foot. Like the STEEL WINGS, the tower pivoted at both ends allowing the total unit to turn with the wind. The top was stayed with steel ropes and the bottom fixed. The wind wheel operated within the tower.
• HAYES WONDER WINDMILL    This windmill was introduced in 1942. Originally in four sizes. 4 foot 6 inches, 6 foot, 8 foot and 10 foot. The 4 foot 6 inch version was eventually dropped. In the 1980's a complete redesign was made and a 2 metre series 515 model was introduced, which continued in production until the sale of the business. Information from a Hayes pamphlet issued by Port Machinery quotes, A small pole mounted direct acting windmill of open type, designed for low lift small quantity pumping. The eight paddle bladed fan is of 1.8 metre diameter. Sealed ball races are used on the main support bearings and the crank head bearings. There was a serial number on the head.

    Operated at 148 Hereford St, Christchurch 1890/1.

• PREMIER WINDMILL    Circa 1890's. Seems to have been produced for some time before 1890. Iron and steel windmill. Illustration shows a design with pole mount, regulated vane, 20 windwheel blades mounted onto the spokes and a single outer ring. It appears to have used a lever counterweight for regulation.

JOLLY WINDMILL CO.

    Operates in Glen Eden from 1979 to the present. Also sold overseas into Australia, Africa and the Pacific area. Also made under licence in Western Australia.

• JOLLY WINDMILL    Solid wheel vaneless design. Pole mounted with stays. Paddle blades linked into a cone shape by rods around the outer rim. Available in 5 wind wheel sizes including a 1.8 metre mill for surface pumping and a 2 metre mill. Another paper lists 5, 6 and 8 foot wind wheels.

    Advertised as an agent for Booth, MacDonald & Co. Carlyle Iron Windmill in 1891. Address in Awamoko.

KING, NEWTON

    Of New Plymouth and Stratford. He advertised the Steel Star windmill in March 1905.

McINTYRE, James

    Operated at Queen St, Onehunga c1921 to c1942. From 1931 to 1942 it was listed as the 'McIntyres Clyde Iron Works LTD'.

MARCY, R.G. MFG CO

    Rufus G. Marcy was one of the original officers of the FLINT & WALLING Manufacturing Co when it was incorporated 1n 1886. He had worked as a salesman for the earlier FLINT & WALLING Co from 1880. In 1897 he left the Kendallville, Indiana , USA firm. Shortly after he started organising a windmill business which was incorporated as the R.G.MARCY Mfg Co 1/1/1898. The new factory was at Bluffton, Indiana. After making small adjustments he began making windmills copied from his old company and named them RED STAR instead of STAR as used by FLINT & WALLING. Not only the mills but the advertising literature and other aspects of the F&W were appropriated and used by him. There was a court case ending on the 27/1/1900 finding in F&W's favour and Marcy was no longer allowed to use the word Star or the Star symbol. In a matter of days they changed their name from Red Star to Red Cross. The firm became the MARCY MANUFACTURING Co in January 1902 after Marcy's retirement. In October 1902 they became the RED CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. The company closed in 1975.

• RED STAR    The windmill appearing in Reid and Greys Jan 1900 advertisement is the back geared model which was available from 6 to 16 foot from the factory.

    Operated at 204 St. Asaph St, Christchurch c1895-96. Advertised as a manufacturer of windmills made from iron and steel with wooden or iron derricks. Previously of Springston.

MILLS E.W. & Co.

    Importer of windmills in the Wellington region. Active in 1898 - 1901. In business in 1906. Later amalgamated with Briscoes to form Briscoe Mills. One of their mills was imported and arrived on the ship Freeman on 11 November 1898. It was sold to the Kelburne Tram Co. on 29 September 1901.

MORRIN T. & S.

    Wholesale and retail ironmonger of Queen St, Auckland who sold American windmills. Advertising at least between the period 4/12/1875 and 18/10/1879.

NEAL, GEO. J.

    Advertised as an agent for Richardsons windmills in December 1886. Address in Cambridge.

NEW ZEALAND RAILWAYS

    Operated from 1875 to the 1930's. The Addington workshops made the windmills c1900. They were supplied to the Public Works Department.

• TYPE 1    Wooden wind wheel, vane and side vane. Direct acting with pin on crank plate. Made in 14, 16 and 20 ft. With wooden tower. It would appear to be a copy of the RAILROAD ECLIPSE windmill made by FAIRBANKS, MORSE & COMPANY in the U. S.

NICHOLAS, Richard

    Operated at 230 Tuam St in 1909.

NORTH OTAGO FOUNDRY

    Advertised as a maker of patent windmills in October 1893. Proprietor was L. R. GILLANDERS. Also called GILLANDERS AND WILSON. Address in Thames St., Oamaru.

OATES, J. G.

    Mr J. G. Oates of Carterton displayed a windmill at the November 1895 and November 1896 Wellington A & P Society's Annual Show. He claimed his Premier, self-governing windmill would stand any wind or climate and work satifactorily, a patent automatic governor regulating the speed when the mill was at work.

PEL PRODUCTS

    This mill was made in New Zealand but appears to have been marketed in Australia by PEL PRODUCTS, 195 Graham St, Port Melbourne, Victoria.

• WINDMOTOR    Drive shaft vertical axis turbine with curved upright aluminium blades between discs. Available with 3 rotor sizes in 1980. A = 4ft diameter x 4ft high. B == 6ft diameter x 6ft high. C = 8ft diameter x 8 ft high. Sealed ball races were used.

PHOENIX FOUNDRY ENGINEERING WORKS

    Operated at Union Street, Hawera in 1901. Proprietor was J. A. Moyes, an engineer and general blacksmith. Adverts in the Hawera & Normanby Star claimed they built windmills in all sizes, but no specific brand name was given.

REICHEL, Louis Tasman

    Took out a patent or application for one No.18640 on October 21,1904 for an improved wind and water motor. Vertical axis.

REID & GRAY LTD

    In business from at least 1889. Situated at Burnside.

• ACME WINDMILL    1892 - 1898 Also known as GREIG's patent "Acme" windmill. Open back geared 2.5 to 1, windmill. 6 ft and 8 foot wind wheels. Had 17 iron blades.
• IMPERIAL WINDMILL    Displayed this windmill at the Egmont A & P Association's Annual Show in November 1904.
• OIL WELL WINDMILL    Became available 1922. There were some design changes in 1925. An oil bath mill with internal teeth main gear. Back geared 2.5 to 1 with a roller and slide design. Governed by a single coiled spring. The single tail vane sheet has a convex end shape and is held between two spars that converge onto the two gear box mounting points. Unusual wind wheel with the inner ring curved to position each blade and the outer ring a straight flat with a curved section attached similar to the inner ring.
• RED CROSS [STAR] WINDMILL    Circa 1900. In 1900 they were agents for the RED STAR windmill made in the USA by R.G.MARCY MFG Co. Advertised wind wheels of 4, 6, 8 and 10 foot, with larger sizes and power mills also available in 1901. Included prices for the 12 foot version in 1902. Displayed a Red Cross windmill at the Taranaki Agricultural Show in December 1901.
• SELF OILER WINDMILL
• VICTORIA WINDMILL - direct action    c1892 - c1897. Open iron windmill. Self regulating. It appears to be a copy of the MAST FOOS Iron Turbine windmill. Reid & Gray claim to have manufactured it "after the style of one of the best American makers." Available with 8 and 10 foot windwheels.
• VICTORIA WINDMILL - geared    c1892 - c1897. Open iron windmill. Self regulating. It appears to be a copy of the MAST FOOS Iron Turbine windmill. Reid & Gray claim to have manufactured it "after the style of one of the best American makers." Available with 10 foot windwheels.
