In which I am still confounded by “Hammer of the Gods”
I still don’t understand how Lucifer was able to take down the gods in 5.19 “Hammer of the Gods.” What was your message here, Supernatural?
Lucifer, father of all demons or not, is still just an angel. He’s not even the eldest or the strongest angel, Michael is. And the gods? They’re gods. By definition, they are stronger than Lucifer, the mere creation of the god of the Abrahamic religions, who, Himself/Herself/Itself, is one of the youngest gods around.
I suppose one could argue that the strength of a god is dependent on how intense and widespread the current belief in that particular god is, and sure, if you consider the god referenced in Supernatural to be the monotheistic god of the Abrahamic religions, then yeah, He/She/It has over 55% of the faith market cornered. But He/She/It is not the one facing the gods in “Hammer of the Gods,” Lucifer is.
And, again, Lucifer is just an angel (and not even that in Islam. In Islam, Lucifer is a jinn). The belief in Lucifer as Satan is strong, I’ll grant you, but not as strong as the belief in the Abrahamic god. If we continue with the idea that a deity is only as strong as the current faith in that deity, then, alright, Lucifer may be stronger than some of the gods featured in this episode; Odin and Baldur, for instance. Baron Samedi, having very localized worship, would be weaker as well.
But Ganesha, one the most well-known and widely worshiped gods in the Hindu pantheon? There is no way that Lucifer would be able to kill Ganesha. That’s just arrogant. It’s even more arrogant since, immediately prior, Kali says that the angels and their god are arrogant for their blatant disregard of other deities. But Lucifer does kill Ganesha, like it is nothing.
I guess I should be glad Lucifer doesn’t kill Kali. That would be absolutely ridiculous. But he almost does. The only reason Kali survives is because Gabriel, another angel, saves her. Which is even more ridiculous, when you think about it, because Gabriel is just Gabriel. He has no particular worshipers, as such, and so, should be absolutely worthless in a showdown between Satan and the Goddess of Time and Change.
Overall, “Hammer of the Gods” is very odd and problematic episode. Why bother having an episode featuring gods of other faiths, with the message, “other gods exist and are important, too!” if you’re not going to take that message seriously? It still does not make any sense.
