Hoff Hall, Castleton State College
Hoff Hall is Castleton State College’s new 162-bed residence hall. The building opened Sept. 9 for its first residents.
According to student reporter JenniLee Mark, “As you walk through the halls of Hoff Hall, you may notice that it just smells, well, new. The floor has yet to look run down by all the traffic going in and out all day and the walls are clearly freshly painted. The tables, chairs, lighting, room numbers, even the glass enclosed stairwells all scream modern. There are communal bar sitting areas and study spaces throughout the building that add to the contemporary, yet comfortable style.”
Lizzi Cota, a senior at Castleton, told Mark that she is thrilled to reside in the new dorm.
“The walls are colorful. It feels homey, not like a jail cell,” Cota said in a campus story written by Mark. “The high ceilings makes the rooms seem more open.”
And student Andre Coutu agrees.
“It’s a nice building to live in, but it still needs some things,” he said in an interview. “For instance, why bother putting air conditioning in and not using it?”
Over 100 photovoltaic energy panels on top of the new building generate 28.8 kilowatts of electricity, according to Dean of Administration Scott Dikeman. The “green” array alone provides one-tenth of the college’s electrical needs.
Hoff Hall is named after former Vermont Democrat Gov. Philip Hoff.
