1 person dead after being hit by train in Valhalla
Posted: Updated:A Metro-North train fatally struck a person on the tracks in Valhalla Tuesday night.
MTA officials say the deadly accident happened just north of the crossing at Commerce Street around 10:15 p.m.
Sources tell News 12 the victim was a young man. It is not known yet why he was on the tracks.
There were about 200 people on the northbound train at the time, and none were hurt.
Another train was brought in to transfer the passengers so they could continue their commute. One track had to be shut down for several hours overnight, causing up to 40-minute delays. Just after 2 a.m. today the tracks were cleared, and trains have been running normally for the morning commute.
Commerce Street is the same area where the deadliest train accident in Metro-North history occurred. In February 2015, Ellen Brody, of Irvington, stopped her SUV on the tracks, causing a fiery collision with a commuter train. Six people, including Brody, were killed, while 15 others were injured.
MTA officials are still investigating Tuesday’s deadly accident.
