It should be noted that on 25 May 1772 a Royal Warrant changed the status of Captain-Lieutenant.

In the cavalry and marching regiments, it was order that they would rank as captain in the army as well as in the regiment with seniority from that date and then any subsequent promotions to that rank from the date of appointment. Nothing on the pay, though I imagine an increase?

In the Foot Guards, captain-lieutenant ranked as captain in the regiment and lieutenant colonel in the army and that dated from 16 January 1688.
