After a three-year absence, Wizard World Comic Con is making its return to the Steel City, July 26-28 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.

Wizard World, which hosts dozens of shows across the country annually, acquired the Pittsburgh Comicon in 2014 and put on its first Pittsburgh show in 2015 and it’s last a year later.

We did shows in Pittsburgh in 2015 and 2016 and fans who attended had a great time but as we revamped our schedule we couldn’t really make it fit,” Jerry Milani, Wizard World spokesperson told the Current Monday morning. But this year, Milani says “the opportunity for a date that fit both our schedule and that of the [convention] center arose, so we jumped on it.

“We have what we think is a successful formula for conducting a show as the pop culture convention scene has changed, and it’s worked in places like Cleveland, Columbus, St. Louis and other mid-sized to major cities. We think we can replicate that in Pittsburgh, and I don’t think we’ll find a more beautiful setting on our entire tour than the David L. Lawrence Convention Center.”

No celebrity guests have been announced thus far, but Milani says the first wave of guests will be forthcoming shortly.

This will be the third comic con on the city’s annual roster. In May, the artist-centric 3 Rivers Comicon will take place in Homestead. Then there is the thrice-annual Steel City Con at the Monroeville Convention Center. The next installment happens Aug. 9-11 and announced guests include George Takei and Lea Thompson.
