(1929–87).
Danish architect. He often used stereometrically pure forms (including the cylinder, pyramid, and sphere) in his work. Among his places of worship St Nicolai Church, Hvidovre (1960), Vangede Church, north of Copenhagen (1974), and Stavnsholt Church, Farum (1981), deserve mention. He is perhaps best known for La Grande Arche de la Défense, Paris (1981–9—with Paul Andreu), a vast structure that is essentially a hollowed-out cube, and terminates the axis that runs from the Tuileries Gardens in the east, through the Arc de Triomphe in the Place de l'étoile, to the La Défense District in the west.
