RALEIGH, N.C. — The Clarence E. Lightner Leadership Endowment Fund is sponsoring a fundraising banquet to raise money for the youth leadership program named in the late mayor’s honor.
The event, marking the 32nd anniversary of the election of Clarence Lightner as Raleigh’s only African-American mayor, will be held Nov. 17 at the Sheraton Capital Center in downtown Raleigh.
Bill Johnson, president and chief operating officer of Progress Energy, will give the keynote address.
Additional speakers include Dianne Boardley Suber, president of Saint Augustine’s College; Orage Quarles III, president of The News & Observer; Barbara Goodmon, president of the A.J. Fletcher Foundation; Smedes York, president of York Properties; and Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker.
Participants in the Lightner Youth Leadership program will also make a special presentation.
The Clarence Lightner Youth Leadership program was created in 2004 to increase civic involvement among students in grades five through 12 through workshops, mentoring by civic and educational leaders and a week-long summer camp.
