World No.49 Ramachandran Mahesh won a silver medal for India in Match Racing at the 15th Asian Sailing Championship in Malaysia. He went down 3-0 to World No. 203 Jeremy Koo of Malaysia in the finals.

In the semifinals Mahesh beat Malaysia’s second best team skippered by Mohd Masyuri. Masyuri won the first two matches, however Mahesh and his team put up a brilliant performance to regain their position by winning the next three matches to bring the final score to 3-2 to advance into the finals.

Singapore’s Maximillian Soh finished third overall.

“Mahesh is a very experienced sailor, better ranked than all of us here with good boat handling skills. But my team and I were here a week ago for the Qualifier and have been training hard since. I suppose you can say we had the home ground advantage” said Jeremy.

Mahesh has never returned without a medal from an Asian Sailing event and has been India’s biggest medal hope in Match Racing since 2006.

Mahesh’s performance at Asian Sailing Championships:

Silver- Asian Sailing Championship 2012, Malaysia
Silver – Asian Sailing Championship 2010, China
Gold – Asian Sailing Championship 2006, Qatar
