Welcoming Georgia Tech's New President Ángel Cabrera

About President Cabrera

A Message from the President

Progress and Service has long been the motto of the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Yellow Jackets in the 21st century have been living those values in more places and in greater numbers than ever before in Tech’s 134-year history.

Our 35,000 students from 130 countries study in Atlanta, on our campuses around the globe, and through our online programs. They are preparing to join our 167,000 alumni working and making a difference here in Georgia, across the United States, and around the world. Equipped with a world-class education, they are Creating the Next in many fields.

“I look forward with great anticipation to the strides we can make together.”

Ángel Cabrera

The talent of Georgia Tech’s students, faculty, staff, and alumni has never been more vital to driving progress and economic opportunity, and solving complex challenges.

There will soon be 8 billion people on this planet, and we must figure out how to improve the quality of life for all of us — how to provide clean, sustainable food and water, health care, and education; build more just and peaceful societies; and protect the natural environment on which our lives depend.

Georgia Tech has what it takes to create the technologies to tackle these challenges, to improve policies and business models, and to articulate a deeper understanding of the human impact — particularly the benefits and risks — of the technologies we develop.

Yellow Jackets stand at the forefront of those efforts. The Institute is not only a strategic asset for Atlanta and Georgia and an invaluable national resource, but it is also one of the world’s essential innovation hubs, holding the keys to finding solutions for the many pressing challenges of this century.

As a proud Georgia Tech alumnus who is now privileged to serve as the Institute’s 12th president, I look forward with great anticipation to the strides we can make together. I invite you to join us in the important work that we have been called upon to undertake: to build a brighter future.

Ángel Cabrera
President
Georgia Institute of Technology

A Message from Dr. Cabrera

June 17, 2019
I just returned to Fairfax, Virginia from a brief and emotional visit to campus with my wife Beth on Friday and I wanted to let you know that I am thrilled to have been selected as your next president.

As you may have read, Beth and I met at Georgia Tech while pursuing our doctorates. Last month, our son Alex earned his BS in Computer Science at Georgia Tech as well.

For about a decade, I have served on the Georgia Tech Advisory Board and visited often. So, as we walked in front of Tech Tower last week, it felt like coming home — back to where it all began.

Cabrera Named President of the Georgia Institute of Technology

Update: July 3, 2019
Ángel Cabrera will begin his term as president Sept. 1, 2019.

June 13, 2019
The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) today named Dr. Ángel Cabrera president of the Georgia Institute of Technology. He will assume the position before Sept. 15, 2019.

“Georgia Tech will continue to excel under the leadership of Dr. Cabrera,” said USG Chancellor Steve Wrigley. “His experience, skillset and deep ties to his alma mater will serve the campus community well, and his vision for the future will help lead Georgia Tech to new heights. I am grateful to the Board of Regents and the search committee for their time and effort in this selection process, and I congratulate Dr. Cabrera on his new role.”

Cabrera has served as president of George Mason University (GMU), a top-tier research institution and the largest public university in Virginia, since 2012.
