Australiaâs [Raelene Boyle] had won the Commonwealth Games in both 1970 and 1974 and was expected to challenge the East German women. She had reached the Olympic final in the 100 in 1968, 1972, and 1976 and in the 200 in 1968 and 1972, and was expected to easily do so in 1976. But in her semi-final, she was disqualified for false starts. She protested but with no success. Defending champion [Renate Stecher] had set two world records since 1972 but had lost the 1974 Europeans to [Irena SzewiÅska-Kirszenstein]. However SzewiÅska-Kirszenstein opted to compete only in the long jump in Montréal and the road seemed clear for Stecher in the final. However, she was surprised in the final by her teammate, Bärbel Eckert, who took the lead on the curve and maintained it to the finish.
