Pickens, Israel (30 January 1780–24 April 1827), third governor of Alabama and U.S. senator, was born near Concord, North Carolina, the son of Samuel Pickens and Jane Carrigan, farmers. Samuel Pickens owned five slaves in 1790. Israel was graduated from Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1802. He then read law and commenced practice in Morganton, North Carolina. In 1808 he was elected to the North Carolina Senate and in 1810 to Congress. The 1810 census recorded him as owning three slaves....
