Amie Hoeber is Pro-Abortion

The major blockbuster from tonight’s 6th District Republican Congressional Debate is that Amie Hoeber supports abortion.

During tonight’s debate, I asked Hoeber a question related to her involvement in the National Women’s Political Caucus, something she notes on her website. Hoeber notes that she has been involved in the organization at various times when she was living in Los Angeles and in Northern Virginia.

The National Women’s Political Caucus is an organization which describes itself as “a multi-partisan grassroots organization dedicated to increasing women’s participation in the political process and creating a political power base designed to achieve equality for all women.” Given that they put this kind of stuff on Facebook and endorsed Donna Edwards for U.S. Senate, you can be the judge of that.

I asked Hoeber the following question:

Ms. Hober, on your website you claim involvement with an organization known as the National Political Women’s Caucus. This group, prominently featuring Nancy Pelosi and the “Stand with Planned Parenthood” icon on the website, takes credit for, among other things, convincing the Democrats to support the decision in Roe vs. Wade. They have also endorsed Donna Edwards for US Senate.Ms. Hober, do you support abortion? If not, why are you did you have such an association with a militantly pro-abortion organization?

Hoeber denied that I ever asked if she supported abortion and tried to pivot the question toward an answer her involvement in the NPWC and away from the issue of abortion (her answer there, too, was also strange about why she would be involved in such a left-wing organization). When she finally answered the question, she said that abortion question was settled law. When I had the opportunity to ask another question I asked her point blank (since she didn’t answer it the first time) if she supported abortion. Again, she reverted back to the idea that abortion is a question of settled law and would not take a stance to say if she was pro-life or pro-abortion

Hoeber just would not answer the question. The idea of referring the question to “settled law” when asked a direct question about abortion is a convenient dodge. Unfortunately, many other things were “settled law” too. Separate but equal was “settled law.” The Dred Scott decision was “settled law.” But those “settled laws” were morally abhorrent. Much like the idea that abortion remains legal is morally abhorrent today. To not have a position on abortion, one way or the other, is like voting “present” on one of the most important moral issues of our day.

Realistically, however, her answer and her reference to “settled law” shows that she in fact is a proponent of abortion.

What’s just as disturbing about all of this is the fact that the National Republican Campaign Committee identified Hoeber as one of their “Young Guns” for the 2016 election cycle. After all of the years of work toward finally passing a bill to defund Planned Parenthood, why has the NRCC turned around and given their endorsement to a pro-abortion candidate in a contested Republican primary featuring a number of solid pro-life candidates?

There’s a long way to go until we get to April 26th. But Amie Hoeber is going to have a rough go of it in a Republican primary full of conservative 6th District voters by being pro-abortion and constantly saying that the issue is “settled law.”
