Critics Consensus

Girlboss has its charms, but they're ultimately undone by a fundamental mishandling of the show's problematic protagonist.

Critic Reviews for Girlboss Season 1

All Critics (39) | Top Critics (18)

This new character may not be the voice of her generation, but she just may be the voice of super-smart TV comedy. Good enough.

If Girlboss hadn't been based on the memoir and business guide from Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso, it might have been a better TV show.

Watching an ignorant but energetic youngster rebel against adulthood is nothing new, and Girlboss' iteration would be fine if it showed some semblance of self-awareness.

At least there's other stuff on TV.

Sophia is the epitome of everything people hate about millennials.

Apr 29, 2019 | Full Review…

The show itself is entertaining, if not addictive. It uses a killer alt-rock, post-punk soundtrack and a vibrant vintage wardrobe to transport viewers right into the lifestyle and mindset of 23-year-old Sophia, through all her quirks and catastrophes.

As much as it pains me to even type this and become one of those negative eBay members or a disgruntled message board commenter, the show was a hit and a miss.

Apr 29, 2019 | Rating: 5/10 | Full Review…

This should be so much more satisfying and the brief glimpses of brilliance make the show all the more frustrating as it constantly is taking one step forward and two steps back.

Oct 30, 2018 | Rating: 2.5/5 | Full Review…

It's got a solid foundation, and is at least worth a watch, even in the extremely busy months of April and May.

Robertson brings Sophia to life in a hilarious and brash way.

Aug 24, 2018 | Full Review…

From my perspective, the show not only does a disservice to women, but to the book itself.

Instead of being a spunky heroine for the digital age, Girlboss's leading lady is a beguiling capitalist anti-hero.

A truly awful show with a protagonist with no redeeming qualities.
  • Mar 06, 2020
The premise was initially interesting, but the main character is nails-on-a-chalkboard annoying. She's so whiny and throws tantrums the entire time. Boo.

I really liked this show! Binged watched in a day! What is wrong with Netflix??? Having a protagonist that is a little off is not a bad thing! Are we living in trump world???

Awesome series! Watched it in a day, and was thrilled to see Robertson act out such a sassy, independent woman

With a pretty normal good vibes from the start , it becomes unbearable and boring at half time as the purpose of the show being hazy and it really speaks everything wrong about girl power but just an irresponsible kid that does whatever the shit she wants . It tries to make you feel good but fails ultimately. Really its just a hit and miss where i couldn't put myself through the whole season

I absolutely love this show and its portrayal of Sophia Amoruso. Her work is honestly amazing and inspirational. it gives you a very raw and real look at modern women in the fashion industry while also giving you snarky comedy genius. If this is really who Sophia Amoruso is, I want her as my best friend. The show is stellar and so is she!

if not everyone understand, does not mean that it might be a shit. in the word of vampires, soldiers, detectives or supermen need to be a space for "girlbosses", because we all have a little piece of them, her. but not always find it. but also not always being themselves.

This is a fun show with a very strong female lead role. I binge watched the 1st season and got a little emotional. I hope there is a season 2. Charlize Theron is one of the producers. This was written by the writers from Pitch Perfect. +love+

I WANT A SEASON 2 PLZ THIS SHOW WAS AMAZING
  • Aug 16, 2018
I love this show because it is different, it shows the kickassness of a girl who is making her way in the world. BRING IT BACK YO!
