Well of course our Lord was voluntarily unmarried and celibate - which should be “a” laudable option for Christians. As for St. Paul, I was unaware that he was ever married, nonetheless, he and Christ both taught that being unmarried/being a eunuch for the kingdom is better.

Except you miss that such a gift is given to only a very few, and to attempt to exercise a gift *that God has not given you* is sinful. If you have not been given the gift of celibacy, then you should absolutely not pursue it. Chastity is meant for all, celibacy for very few.

Where does the Bible say that celibacy is only for very few? It is not sinful to attempt celibacy in imitation of Christ or Mary or St. Paul before “receiving it.” Jesus said in Matthew 19:12, “he that is able to receive it, let him receive it.” Yes, chastity should be universal.

The gift of chastity is set in opposition to the gift of marital lust, which due to our sinful nature expands far beyond the bounds of marriage. Today, the clinical term for it is asexuality. How many asexual men have you met in your life? I’ve never met one, among ten 1000.

It is true that Scripture says some men may receive this gift for the sake of the Gospel. But that is only true beside the same Scripture which says that it is a damning sin to burn with passion, as nearly all men do.pic.twitter.com/ks6DQwKnwh

The vow of celibacy taken by priests (latin rite), monks and nuns is voluntary. They have a period of “discernment” in order to decide whether or not to consecrate their lives wholly to God and His Church. The choice is their own.

I can vow to be a firetruck. That doesn’t make it so.

Becoming a firetruck is a physical impossibility. Celibacy is very possible - especially for a busy priest.

The difference here is that you have turned celibacy from a gift from God, which is what Jesus called it, into a human decision. The gift of celibacy is *not* synonymous with “too busy for sex."

The Mass is offered daily in most parishes, sometimes multiple times. The other sacraments must be made available at least weekly. Confession, annointing of the sick, marriages, last rights and funerals, faith formation classes, etc. all along with their own prayers keep him busy

As a PK, I’m well aware. My dad has worked 70 hour weeks for decades.
