The Northern Peripheral Road (NH248-BB) is also commonly known as the Dwarka Expressway. The 29 km long road which is currently under construction is an 8-lane wide road that will connect Delhi (Dwarka) and Haryana (Gurugram). Construction of this expressway is expected to ease the traffic on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. The expressway will start from Shiv Murti in Mahipalpur (Delhi) and end at Kherki Daula toll plaza in Gurguram.

The Dwarka Expressway is being constructed in different packages; Packages 1 & 2 are in Delhi and total 9.5 km in length. Package 1 (5.3 km) starts from Shiv Murti at NH-48 and ends at the Rail under Bridge near Sector 21, Dwarka. Package 2 (4.2 km) begins from the Rail under Bridge and ends at the Delhi Haryana border on the expressway. Packages 3 & 4 are in Gurugram which is 19 km in length.

Package 3 is 10.2 km long stretching on the expressway. This will pass through 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 109, 110, 111, 112 and 113 sectors in Gurugram. The last stretch of 8.7 km comprises of Package 4 and starts from Rail over Bridge at Basai and ends at a cloverleaf interchange near Kherki Daula. Package 5 is also in Delhi which will connect Dwarka Expressway to T3 of IGI airport. With package 5, the entire length of the Dwarka Expressway in Delhi comes to 10.1 km.

  • Mahipalpur (begins at Shiv Murti on 20 km milestone of NH-48
  • IGI Airport
  • Dwarka
  • Bijwasan railway station

In Haryana –
  • New Palam Vihar in Gurgaon
  • Kherki Daula Toll Plaza (terminates here at Delhi-Mumbai expressway and Southern Peripheral Road)

The project, costing approximately INR 7,500 crores was planned in 2006. Initially the project was supposed to be merely 18 km long and expected to open by 2012; however, land acquisitions delayed the completion of the project. The contract of the project was awarded in 2011 and of the initial 18 km, nearly 14 km were completed by 2016.

The work is currently running behind schedule because of land acquisition issues in Haryana and the felling and uprooting of trees in the Delhi region of the expressway. Preparatory work on package 2 of Dwarka Expressway started in August 2019 which is expected to be completed in 24 months. Work on package 3 & package 4 in Gurgaon is already underway and is expected to be completed by December 2020.

The 6-lane road in Package 1(from Sector 21 underpass Dwarka till Shiv Murti NH48) needs to be completely dug to make an 8-lane tunnel. Post completion of the 8-lane tunnel, the 6-lane surface road will be restored. Thus, on completion of package 1, the new road will be 14 lanes (8 lanes tunneled and 6 lanes on the surface) with 3 service lanes on either side of the road.

Package 2 will have separate elevated structures (8-lane, 6-lane and 2-3 lanes for ramp) running parallel to each other. These 14 lanes would provide excellent connectivity to Najafgarh and Gurgaon border. There will be multiple entry and exit points from UER-2 and India International Convention and Expo Centre located in sector 25 Dwarka.

Package 3 (Haryana border to Basai Railway overbridge) and Package 4 (Basai overbridge to CPR/SPR/NH8 Junction) of Dwarka expressway, which falls in Haryana are being constructed by Larsen & Toubro company. The project was awarded to L&T in December 2018 and the work is expected to be completed in 24 months. The entire stretch is to be an elevated one with 2 exit points at Babarpur & Pataudi Road.

As of now, the government needs to fell trees along the area to complete the construction on the Delhi portion of the expressway. However, mass deforestation without planned afforestation and transplantation of trees has created a huge uproar amongst the citizens. the matter is currently under debate with a petition filed in NGT to stop the cutting down of trees. In the Haryana portion of the Dwarka expressway, there were some issues related to land acquiring near New Palam Vihar Sector 110 and Kherki Daula in Sector 84.
